Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatusfor machining a workpiece with a laser beamcoupled into a fluid jet. The apparatuscomprises a laser unitfor providing the laser beam, a nozzle unitwith an aperturefor producing the fluid jet, and an optical unitconfigured to provide the laser beamfrom the laser unitonto the nozzle unit. Further, the apparatuscomprises a control unitconfigured to controlthe optical unitand/or nozzle unitto change a point of incidenceof the laser beamon the nozzle unit. The apparatusalso comprises a sensing unitconfigured to sense laser lightreflected from a surfaceof the nozzle unitand produce a sensing signalbased on the sensed reflected laser light. The control unitis particularly configured to evaluate the sensing signaland to determine a defined sensing pattern in the sensing signalindicative of the laser beambeing fully and/or partially aligned with the aperture
