Abstract
An indexable drill insert () includes a top surface (), a bottom surface (), and a plurality of side surfaces () adjoining the top surface () and the bottom surface (). A plurality of cutting edges () is formed by an intersection of a respective side surface () with the top surface (). One aspect of the invention is that the top surface () includes a protruding portion () having a backwall () and a segmented portion () extending radially outwardly with respect to the protruding portion () for effective chip breaking. Another aspect of the invention is that a rake surface () has a positive rake angle (RA) that varies along a first cutting edge section () of the cutting edge () to lower cutting force.
