Abstract

An optical guidewire system employs an optical guidewire (), an optical guidewire controller (), a guide interface () and an optical connector (). The optical guidewire () is for advancing a catheter () to a target region relative to a distal end of the optical guidewire (), wherein the optical guidewire () includes one or more guidewire fiber cores () for generating an encoded optical signal () indicative of a shape of the optical guidewire (). The optical guidewire controller () is responsive to the encoded optical signal () for reconstructing the shape of the optical guidewire (). The guidewire interface () includes one or more interface fiber core(s) () optically coupled to the optical guidewire controller (). The optical connector () facilitates a connection, disconnection and reconnection of the optical guidewire () to the guidewire interface () that enables a backloading the catheter () on the optical guidewire ().
