Abstract

A shelf support beam () for use in a shelving unit () to support a shelf (). A structural member () has a C-shaped cross-section. A web () separates a top flange () from a bottom flange (). The top flange () is configured to support the shelf (). The web (), the top flange (), and the bottom flange () define a channel () of the member (). The channel () defines a cavity height (C, D, E). The top flange () and the bottom flange () define a top flange width (C, D, E) and a bottom flange width (C, D, E), respectively. A ratio of the cavity height (C, D, E) to a sum of the top flange width (C, D, E) and the bottom flange width (C, D, E) is greater than 1, is at least 1.20, or is about 1.40. The C-shaped cross-section has a moment of inertia () of greater than 0.40, greater than 0.45, or at least 0.46. The top flange () includes an elevated portion () and a lower or shelf support portion () separated by a sidewall ().
