Abstract

The present disclosure provides an isolated, recombinant, or synthetic polynucleotide comprising a FIT1 protein, and homologs, fragments, and variations thereof. The disclosure further relates to transgenic plants, plant parts, and plant cells comprising one or more of these polynucleotides, and exhibit resistance or tolerance to a pathogen, such as. The disclosure further relates to methods of genetically engineering a pathogen resistance or tolerance trait in a plant, plant part, or plant cell, comprising targeted gene editing of a FIT1 homolog, and plants produced therefrom. The disclosure further relates to methods for identifying new functional FIT1 genes and/or alleles thereof.
