An adjustment subassembly for a steering column assembly including a telescope plate () adapted to be secured to a column tube () of the steering column assembly; a locking pin () having one or more features () at one end that are adapted to engage with the telescope plate (); a preload plate () adapted to receive at least a portion of the locking pin () at an opposing end of the locking pin (); and a user operating device () for causing engagement and disengagement of the locking pin () and the telescope plate () through contact with the preload plate ().
