Abstract

A rechargeable lithium battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte including a lithium salt, wherein at least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode includes a current collector, an electrode tab extending from the current collector, an active material layer disposed on the current collector, and a passivation film formed on at least one of the current collector and the electrode tab. The passivation film includes a material represented by Chemical Formula 1:CuX(POF)YZ,  Chemical Formula 1wherein, in Chemical Formula 1, X is a Cto Calkylene group, Y is represented by Chemical Formula 2, Z is an anion group of the lithium salt, and n is 1 or 2:NC—R—CN, (wherein, Ris a Cto Calkylene group).  Chemical Formula 2
