A transport refrigeration system having a refrigeration unit including: a refrigeration circuit () configured to circulate a first refrigerant; a mechanical subcooler (); and a battery system () configured to power the mechanical subcooler. The mechanical subcooler is thermally connected to the refrigeration circuit.
