Abstract

An optical waveguideincludes a substrate, a core layer, a support, and a suppressing portion. The core layerincludes a light propagating portionand a diffraction grating portion. The diffraction grating portionincludes a fine line pattern formed therein. The supportis made from a material having a smaller refractive index than a refractive index of the core layer. The supportsupports the core layerwith respect to the substrate. The suppressing portion suppresses deformation of fine linesthat form the fine line pattern. The supportis not provided in an entire region between the light propagating portionand the substratein a cross-section perpendicular to a longitudinal direction of the core layerat least at a position in the longitudinal direction.
