Abstract

Methods and instruments for measuring a liquid sample (S) in a well plate () by means of an optical chip. The chip () comprises an optical sensor () that is accessible to the liquid sample (S) at a sampling area (SA) of the chip. A free-space optical coupler () is accessible to receive input light (L) and/or emit output light (L) via a coupling area (CA) of the chip (). The sampling area (SA) of the chipis submerged in the liquid sample (S) while keeping the liquid sample (S) away from the coupling area (CA) for interrogating the optical coupler () via an optical path (P) that does not pass through the liquid sample (S).
