Abstract

There is provided a method that includes receiving pulse-oximetry measurements (SpO) of a patient's peripheral arterial blood oxygen saturation during a first time period, and receiving breathing samples of the patient. The method further includes determining, using breathing samples of the patient, oxygen partial pressure measurements (PO) and carbon dioxide partial pressure measurements (PCO) from exhaled air of the patient during a steady-state breathing of the patient during the first time period. The method also includes determining an arterial oxygen partial pressure (PCO), an oxygen deficit (PO−PO) and a respiratory exchange ratio (RQ) of the patient using the pulse-oximetry measurements (SpO), the oxygen partial pressure measurements (PO) and the carbon dioxide partial pressure measurements (PCO), and generating one or more signals based on the determining of the arterial oxygen partial pressure (PO), the oxygen deficit (PO−PO) and the respiratory exchange ratio (RQ) of the patient.
