Abstract
A fuel cell apparatus including a fuel cell comprising a membrane electrode assembly between an anode and a cathode, a first set of channels between the anode and the assembly, and a second set of channels between the cathode and the assembly. The first set of channels is spaced from and extends across a width of the second set of channels in a non-parallel configuration and at least one of the first or second set of channels are oriented to provide gravitationally assisted water removal; at least one of the first set or second set of channels has a shorter length than the other one of the first set and second set of channels; or at least one of the first set or second set of channels has intrusion regions that extend portions of the assembly into at least one of the first set or second set of channels.
