Abstract

A fuel cell assembly () is provided. The fuel cell assembly () includes a first endplate (), a second endplate (), a plurality of separator plates () provided between the first and second endplates () and (), and a plurality of fuel cells () forming a fuel cell stack (). Each of the fuel cells () is provided between adjacent ones of the separator plates (). A plurality of oxidant flow channels () is formed in the separator plates (). The oxidant flow channels () define a first flow passage. Each of the fuel cells () has an active area. A portion () of the separator plates () extends beyond the active area of the fuel cells () to define a second flow passage at a downstream portion of the first flow passage.
