The method comprises imaging (s) the marking (); reading (s) the code represented by the imaged marking; generating (s) a signature based on the property of the preexisting layer () as detected by the imaging device () through at least part of the imaged machine-readable representation of the code; and generating of a measure of authenticity of the object () based on the read code and generated signature. The invention also relates to apparatuses, systems and computer programs for that purpose.
