Abstract

Systems and methods are described for computing real-time athletic performance parameters that characterize an athlete's activity while participating in a sport. A system includes a performance measuring unit that is, for example, attached to an article of clothing of an athlete and that monitors movement and activity while the athlete participates in the sport. The performance measuring unit can include multiple types of activity-based sensors (e.g., an accelerometer, a magnetometer, and/or a gyroscope) that are configured to collect sensor data reflective of positional changes of the performance measuring unit. The computing unit of the performance measuring unit processes the collected sensor data in real-time using specified techniques to identify the occurrence of 'events,' which refer to a particular time periods during which the collected sensor data are associated with movements of interest (e.g., movements associated with a high intensity action).
