Abstract

Antimicrobial compositions and films are provided comprising a polymer and antimicrobial nanoparticles evenly dispersed in the polymer. The antimicrobial nanoparticles comprises an ionic antimicrobial agent and a support agent that localizes the ionic antimicrobial agent to surfaces of the support agent, and wherein the support agent releases the ionic antimicrobial agent through chemical exchange. In this manner, the antimicrobial nanoparticles act as a stored source of antimicrobial agents. The polymer configured to allow the ionic antimicrobial agent released by the support agent to permeate or migrate through the polymer and to the surface of the composition or film, thereby maintaining antimicrobial properties on the surface of the composition for film over an extended time.
