Abstract
An actuator system and method () includes a blow out preventer (), a hydraulic motor (), a gear box () intermediate hydraulic motor () and blow out preventer (), and a position indicator (). Gear box () has an input (), an output (), and a gear set (). Gear set () is biased by a spring () acting on a piston () to a default high range gear ratio when blow out preventer () is open, to provide maximum closure/lock speed. Gear set () is moved by a hydraulic command signal acting on piston () to a low range gear ratio when blow out preventer () is closed/locked, to provide maximum torque to move blow out preventer () toward its open position. Position indicator () shows the actual position of blow out preventer () independent of the number of turns of input () to move the blow out preventer.
