Abstract

A system and method is disclosed for informing a user of recent activities in an online social network. A message group in an online activity stream of an online network is identified. The message group includes a first message describing a first activity of an online user of the online network, and multiple second messages responsive to the first message, the second messages being representative of multiple ancillary activities performed in the online network with respect to the first activity. A single notification is generated that includes a first description of the first activity, different than the first message, and a second description of the multiple ancillary activities different than each of the multiple second messages. The single notification is then presented in a notification list with other notifications.
