Abstract
Methods for treating oil-based drilling fluids with a fluid loss additive that includes one or more hydrocarbon resins. An oil-based drilling fluid and a hydrocarbon resin can be combined to produce a treated oil-based drilling fluid. The hydrocarbon resin can include a polymerized product of a reaction mixture that can include a dicyclopentadiene; at least one member selected from the group consisting of: a dimer of an aliphatic cyclic diene having five carbon atoms, a dimer of an aliphatic non-cyclic diene having five carbon atoms, a monoolefin, a diolefin, or a polyene, each having more than five carbon atoms and no aromatic rings, a C-olefin, a debutanized aromatic concentrate, and any mixture thereof; and at least one member selected from the group consisting of: a fatty acid-containing material, a rosin acid-containing material, and a mixture thereof.
