The industrial power tool system includes a controller physically disposed in a predefined location within an assembly line work station. The controller has a first radio frequency transceiver that propagates a digital communication signal at a predefined power. A human operable portable power tool has a second radio frequency transceiver configured to communicate with the first transceiver, providing a signal strength datum indicative of the received signal strength. A processor circuit causes the tool to perform a sequence of predefined assembly job steps that are mediated by the processor circuit according to a control loop running on the processor circuit. The processor circuit compares the signal strength datum to a predefined signal strength threshold to determine if the distance between the first and second radio frequency transceivers is less than a predefined distance that defines a home area proximate the controller. The processor circuit uses the test of this distance as at least one operative step in the control loop that mediates the sequence of predefined assembly job steps.

Power tool system having in-station verification utilizing radio frequency signal strength

The circuit for controlling a rotating three-phase motor of the type having three interconnected motor coils each corresponding to one of three phases employs a plurality of switching circuit components, each connected to the motor to supply current to one of the coils. A signal generator circuit produces in synchronism with the rotation of the motor a variable duty cycle pulse-width modulated signal for each of the switching circuit components. A logic gating circuit is coupled to the signal generator circuit and to the switching components. The logic gating circuit is operative to cause the switching circuit components to selectively place pairs of motor coils in current conducting states such that when the variable duty cycle pulse-width modulated signals are each concurrently in the same logical on-off state, the logic gating circuit supplies a logical off state to each of the switching circuit components.

Software-controlled electronic circuit for switching power to a three-phase motor

The method of controlling a rotating three-phase motor involves generating in synchronism with the rotation of the motor a variable duty cycle pulse-width modulated signal for each of the switching circuit components used to supply current to the motor coils. The generated variable duty cycle pulse-width modulated signals control the switching circuit components to selectively place pairs of motor coils in current conducting states and to develop an associated varying voltage for each of the phases. This varying voltage is monitored to identify the one phase that is at a voltage in between the voltages of the other two phases. Then for the identified one phase, the variable duty cycle pulse-width modulated signal is specially generated so that when the switching circuit components of the other two phases are concurrently switched on, the switching circuit component of the identified one phase is not switched on.

A torque applying system includes a torque applying tool having a motor and rotating output spindle, a torque sensor that measures an instantaneous torque exerted by the output spindle during a fastening cycle, and a controller operatively connected to the tool to control the tool's rotational speed during the fastening cycle. The controller is programmed to control the tool's rotational speed to be [(&#x3c4;&#x2212;&#x3c4;)/t]/r, wherein t is a time constant of speed control, &#x3c4;is a target final torque for the fastening cycle, and r is a torque rate.

A controller that controls an automated tool that comprises a monochromatic display, a backlighting module, and a processor. The monochromatic display comprises a plurality of pixels that are selectively activated and deactivated to convey information to a user. The backlighting module provides a backlight for the display, wherein the backlighting module is capable of controllably changing the color of the backlight. The processor that controls the display to selectively activate and deactivate the plurality of pixels to convey information about the automated tool, and wherein the processor controls the backlighting module such that the backlight provided by the backlighting module conveys information about the automated tool.
