A blank for producing a carton and a carton erected from the blank wherein two 180&#xb0; fold lines of each fold-in panel in the blank and carton extend from a point on a second end edge of such panel substantially midway between first and second side edges thereof to respective ones of points of the intersections of a first end edge thereof and first and second side edges thereof. Each of these two 180&#xb0; fold lines of the fold-in panels includes first and second compressed areas extending from respective ends of the 180&#xb0; fold line, and a C-shaped cut extending between the first and second compressed areas. The fold-in panels form part of continuous closure panels of the carton erected from the blank and enable the continuous closure panels to snap shut upon closure and remain closed in a closed position.

Carton and blank for producing a carton

A system for creating and dispensing cushioning dunnage includes a plurality of material shaping members to convert a sheet stock material into a continuous strip of cushioning product. The shaping members include a constant-entry roller assembly having at least two tapered rollers supported end to end for rotation about respective ones of first and second axes arranged at an obtuse angle whose aspect faces a circumferential side of the rollers that first engages sheet stock material traveling over the rollers from a supply roll of the material. The tapered rollers present material engaging surfaces on an imaginary material conversion line transverse to the travel direction of the material where the material first engages the rollers for more precise and consistent control of alignment of the stock material. The roller assembly has free ends over which the sheet stock material can be folded to reduce the width of the material traveling over the rollers.

Cushioning conversion system and method

A modular/configurable rotary die and a rotary die cutter () incorporating the die for making a corrugated carton blank () are disclosed. The rotary die comprises a plurality of die components () each having at least one blade (-) thereon for at least one of scoring, creasing and cutting a corrugated sheet () to cooperatively form a corrugated carton blank. With reference to the three dimensions of a carton () to be erected from the corrugated carton blank, the die components include at least one length die component (), at least one height die component () and at least one width die component (). By replacing at least some of the die components with different sizes/types of die components different sizes/types of carton blanks can be produced without requiring the use of dedicated rotary dies for each size/type of carton blank.

Modular/configurable die for a rotary die cutter

A system for creating and dispensing cushioning dunnage is small and permits flexible installation configuration options for a single or multiple packing stations. A compact apparatus of the system is capable of being pivotally mounted as a unit on a stand and includes a motor and a material feeding arrangement driven by the motor for pulling material from a supply roll of the material supported on a stand of the system, and feeding it through the apparatus. A plurality of material shaping members upstream of the feeding arrangement shape the material in the apparatus to convert it into a continuous strip of cushioning product. The feeding arrangement in one embodiment includes cooperating feed rollers, at least one of which is a rotary cutting die having a plurality of cutting blades on its surface for cutting slits in the material at spaced locations along the length of the material to allow an operator to manually rip a desired length of cushioning product from the material being dispensed from the apparatus.

Compact apparatus and system for creating and dispensing cushioning dunnage

A method, apparatus and system for making cushioning product, and a roll tensioner therefor apply frictional resistance to the periphery of a roll of material to be converted into cushioning product with at least one roll support member which supports the roll in addition to applying frictional resistance to rotation. Efficient operation is attained automatically in that the frictional resistance applied and also the pulling profile exerted on the material during unwinding of the roll are changed as a function of weight and/or other characteristics of the roll of material to be converted into cushioning product.

The carton has 180&#xb0; fold lines with a compressed area at each end and a slit joining the compressed areas. A carton is erected by moving the blank in a first direction against a stop to form a first set of 90&#xb0; folds, holding the blank stationary with a suction while pushing the blank in a second direction to form a second set of 90&#xb0; folds, erecting the carton. A filled carton is closed by advancing it through the central opening of a V-shaped member to increasingly fold the carton top panels. The closed carton is sealed by advancing it through a second V-shaped member and into contact with a pivotally supported sealing device.

An automatic roll tensioner for a material dispensing system enables a material, e.g., paper or plastic, to be unwound from a roll of the material by pulling the material from the roll while maintaining tension on the material when pulling suddenly stops. The roll of material is positioned in the roll tensioner such that it can be rotated about a longitudinal axis of the roll by pulling the material from the roll to unwind material from the roll. A mechanism actuated by the weight of the roll of material applies frictional resistance to the rotation of the roll at a plurality of circumferentially spaced locations on the periphery of the roll. An apparatus for converting sheets of paper into cushioning dunnage advantageously employs the automatic roll tensioner.
