Photocrosslinkable materials

The present invention relates to mesogenic, cross-linkable mixtures comprising (i) a cross-linkable liquid crystalline host compound comprising at least one cross-linkable liquid crystalline compound, and (ii) at least one chiral or achiral rod shaped additive component, wherein said additive component has a rigid core and comprises at least two fused or linked, optionally substituted, non-aromatic, aromatic, carbocyclic or heterocyclic groups, and also comprises at least one optionally substituted alkyl residue, and at least one polymerizable group and wherein the additive component has a transition temperature to the isotropic state of 40&#xb0; C. or lower. The invention also relates to the novel chiral or achiral rod-shaped additive compounds used for the preparation of these mixtures, to mixtures according to the invention in form of an elastomer, polymer gel, polymer network or polymer film, to polymer networks and liquid crystalline polymer films prepared from these mixtures and to optical or electrooptical components comprising polymer networks and liquid crystalline polymer films prepared from such mixtures. Further, the invention relates to the use of the chiral or achiral rod shaped compounds as components of a cross-linkable liquid crystalline mixture in the production of orientated liquid crystalline polymers, to liquid crystalline mixtures comprising these compounds, to liquid crystalline polymers and liquid crystalline polymer networks prepared from such liquid crystalline mixtures, and to liquid crystalline devices comprising these compounds.

Additive components for liquid crystalline materials

The present invention is directed towards polymerizable dichroic azo dyes comprising azo-chromophores having at least one standard mesogenic ring system attached to said chromophores and at least one polymerizable group leading to dyes having sufficient solubilty and a very high order parameter.

Polymerizable dichroic azo dyes

The present invention concerns functionalized photoreactive compounds of formula (I), that are particularly useful in materials for the alignment of liquid crystals. Due to the adjunction of an electron withdrawing group to specific molecular systems bearing an unsaturation directly attached to two unsaturated ring systems, exceptionally high photosensitivities, excellent alignment properties as well as good mechanical robustness could be achieved in materials comprising said functionalized photoreactive compounds of the invention.

Polymerizable dichromophoric dichroic azo dyes

A diamine compound is proposed as well as polymers, copolymers, polyamic acids, polyamic acid esters, or polyimides based on such compound. The compound is represented by one of the general formulae (Ia) and (Ib). It could be shown that such structures, in particular for a specific choice of the residue B, provide, if e.g. used as orientation layers, a photostable, vertically aligning material with an improved VHR.

Dichroic mixtures

A compound is of formula (I), in which: Ato A, Eand Eeach independently represent hydrogen or an optionally-substituted hydrocarbon group; Band Beach independently represent a single bond, an oxygen atom or an optionally-substituted hydrocarbon group; MGand MGeach independently represent an optionally-substituted ring system; CG is a divalent or polyvalent chiral group. The optically active compound may be used as a doping agent for liquid crystals for a wide range of applications including solid state cholesteric filters for projection displays, circular polarisers, optical filters, etc.

Liquid crystal compounds

A compound of formula (I): wherein MG and MG each independently represent an optionally-substituted aliphatic group with 1 to 80 C-atoms, in which one or more C-atoms may be replaced by a heteroatom, in such a way that oxygen atoms are not linked to one another; or an optionally-substituted aromatic or non-aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring system, with 1 to 80 C-atoms; and MG represents a group comprising at least two and up to four optionally-substituted aromatic or non-aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring systems, with 1 to 80 C-atoms, wherein, when MG represents a group comprising four optionally-substituted ring systems, at least three of the ring systems are aligned in between B and B . The groups MG , MG and MG in these new &ldquo;staircase molecules&rdquo; may be selected so that each one has one or more of the properties which are required in an LCP material prepared by polymerizing the compound.
