An efficient method for providing both dedicated and simulcast services over a common wireless infrastructure is described. The services can be available to a single terminal as well as to a multiplicity of terminals simultaneously. The method uses time division multiplexing and orthogonal frequency division multiple access for simulcasting information and transmitting dedicated message information from a plurality of base stations forming a cellular pattern over the same wireless frequency channel. The method comprises the steps of constructing frames for transmission by the plurality of base stations comprising control information, simulcast information and dedicated message information within predetermined time slots of the frames and allocating the simulcast information and the dedicated message information to time slots of the same frame predetermined by the control information of the frame. The underlying modulation technology used is OFDM and thereby the channel delay-dispersion is minimized.

Combined simulcasting and dedicated services in a wireless communication system

A channel receiver operable to implement fractional dedicated physical channel (F-DPCH) for high-speed data packet access is provided. A received RF signal is processed to produce a set of soft symbol outputs. The receiver detects whether transmit power control (TPC) command bits are present in the set of soft symbol outputs. The TPC command bits are conveyed with the RF signal over non-dedicated pilot bits in the processed baseband signal. When TPC command bits are detected, the set of soft symbol outputs are processed to produce estimated TPC command bits. A TPC quality estimate is generated based on the estimated TPC command bits. A signal-to-interference ratio for the WCDMA dedicated physical channel is adjusted based upon a comparison of the TPC quality estimate with a TPC quality target to effect F-DPCH power control.

A network having distribution of access point loading includes access points to which mobile stations can associate themselves based upon access point beacon signal levels and loading levels for the various access points. A mobile station receives beacon signals from various access points and determines a signal strength for the received beacon signals. The mobile station also receives access point loading information from the access points. The mobile station associates with an access point based upon the access point beacon signal strengths and the access point loading information.

Certain aspects of a method and system for delay matching in a rake receiver are disclosed. Aspects of one method may include compensating for a delay associated with at least one or both of the following in a rake receiver: a control channel and a data channel, prior to individual processing of received data by the data channel and individual processing of received data by the control channel. The data channel or the dedicated physical channel (DPCH) may be delayed with respect to the control channel, which may comprise, for example, the common pilot control channel (CPICH), by a particular time period.

Method and system for delay matching in a rake receiver

A downlink channel receiver operable to implement fractional dedicated physical channel (F-DPCH) processing within a Rake receiver structure is provided. The downlink channel receiver includes a receiver, a baseband processing block, a WCDMA processing block, wherein F-DPCH processing is divided between a plurality of hardware processing blocks and a plurality of firmware (FW) processing blocks. The receiver is operable to convert a radio frequency (RF) signal to a baseband signal. The baseband processing block operable to processes and provides the baseband signal to the WCDMA processing block. F-DPCH processing is divided between the plurality of hardware processing blocks and plurality of firmware (FW) processing blocks.

Certain aspects of a method and system for delay matching in a rake receiver for WCDMA closed loop modes are disclosed. Aspects of one method may include selecting a set of channel estimates from a plurality of channel estimates generated for a delay matched branch and/or a non-delay matched branch in a rake receiver. A plurality of weight factors may be generated based on the selected set of channel estimates. In the delay matched branch of the rake receiver, the application of the generated plurality of weight factors may be delayed by a particular time period. A delay associated with a control channel and/or a data channel may be compensated based on the delayed application of the generated plurality of weight factors.

Method and system for delay matching in a rake receiver for WCDMA closed loop modes

A method for setting and adjusting MAC fragmentation threshold for IEEE 802.11 networks operating at different data rates is presented. The fragmentation threshold is adjusted based on throughput performance, delay constraints and hidden node influence.

Adaptive MAC fragmentation and rate selection for 802.11 wireless networks

There is provided a method for generating an error signal for an automatic frequency control (AFC) loop in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system. Sign information relating to phase differences in received pilot signals is accumulated. In one embodiment, the accumulated sign information is compared against predetermined threshold levels. The error signal is generated when at least one of the predetermined threshold levels is satisfied. In a second embodiment, the accumulated sign information is decimated. An output of the decimating step is utilized as the error signal for the AFC loop.

Method and apparatus for robust automatic frequency control in CDMA systems with constant pilot signals

A network includes access points that admit/terminate mobile station associations based upon the loading level of the access point and/or whether a mobile station can associate with a further access point. Mobile stations transmit information indicative of the access points to which they can associate. A relatively highly loaded access point can reduce its beacon power so that one or more connected mobile stations will migrate to a further access point covering the migrating mobile station.
