An self adjusting back support assembly for a seat is provided comprising a plurality of pivotally adjustable back support members juxtaposed one another such that each of said back support members is able to pivot about an axis contained wholly within an adjacent back support member allowing the back support assembly to adopt a serpentine contour substantially following a contour of an occupant's back.

A backrest for use with a chair includes a support structure. The support structure has a rigid outer rim and flexible inner back support section. The support section consist of a number of generally parallel slats (vertically extending members) which seperately support parallel longitudinal sections of the person's back. Each slat produces a force against the person's back responsive to the weight placed on the slat by the person's back. As the person shifts positions, each slat moves to dynamically provide an increased or decreased force against the person's back, depending on whether the person is applying an increased or decreased force against the slat.

Conformable backrest for a chair

A backrest for supporting a person's back having a front surface and a rear surface has a flexible support section having a fixed end which is mounted to a support structure and a free end which is displaceable vertically with respect to the fixed end, the support section is configured to be compressed and displaced forwardly when the free end is moved towards the fixed end. In one embodiment, an adjustment member is drivingly connected to the free end; and, a detent member for selectively receiving the adjustment member in one of a plurality of positions, the support member biasing the adjustment member into retaining engagement with the detent member due to the compression of the flexible support member by the displacement of the free end towards the fixed end. In another embodiment, a cam mounted off-center on a shafted controls the compression of the support structure.

A chair having a swingable chair back with a top pivot includes a frame having laterally spaced first and second uprights. A back having upper and lower ends is attached to the frame. Also attached to the frame adjacent the lower end of the back is a seat. A pivot assembly couples the first and second uprights to the back and permits pivoting of the back about a substantially horizontal pivot axis. The pivot axis projects laterally of the back and is positioned in the vicinity of the upper end of the back. A biasing device cooperates with the back and normally urges the lower portion of the back forwardly away from a rearward position.

A chair having adjustable height arms includes a rigid chair frame having first and second uprights. A back is attached to the chair frame and includes upper and lower ends. A seat is also attached to the chair frame and is adjacent the lower end of the back. Cantilevered to each of the first and second uprights is an arm assembly that projects outwardly therefrom adjacent opposite sides of the seat. Each arm assembly includes a coupling structure that is releasably engaged with a respective upright and is configured to release from the upright when the arm assembly is tilted upward relative to the respective upright to permit the elevational position of the arm assembly to be adjusted.
