An orthopedic prosthetic joint comprising a joint couple having a first bearing surface made of a poly aryl ether ketone (PAEK) and a second joint component having a second bearing made of a polymer that is softer than the PAEK such as UHMWPE the first and second bearing surfaces in sliding engagement with one another.

A method for producing a wear resistant polyethylene medical implant includes forming a medical implant, such as an orthopedic implant, made at least partially of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The polyethylene may be irradiated with gamma ray or e-beam radiation to form free radicals and then crosslinked to eliminate free radicals prior to exposure to oxygen. The so treated bearing surface of the crosslinked polyethylene is then coated with a photoinitiator. Thereafter the bearing material is photocrosslinked with ultra-violet (UV) radiation. The photocrosslinking process can also be applied to non-crosslink UHMWPE.

Orthopedic paek-on-polymer bearings

A method of fabricating a material having a high concentration of a carbide constituent. The method may comprise adding a carbide source to a biocompatible material in which a weight of the carbide source is at least approximately 10% of the total weight, heating the carbide source and the biocompatible material to a predetermined temperature to melt the biocompatible material and allow the carbide source to go into solution to form a molten homogeneous solution, and impinging the molten homogeneous solution with a high pressure fluid to form spray atomized powder having carbide particles. The size of a particle of carbide in the atomized powder may be approximately 900 nanometers or less. The biocompatible material may be cobalt chrome, the carbide source may be graphite, and the fluid may be a gas or a liquid.

A prosthetic head for a femoral component has a metal shell with a tapered cavity. The shell has a part-spherical outer surface defining an inner portion terminating in an open end. A polymeric material completely fills the inner portion of the hollow shell extending from an inner surface of the shell to the open end. The polymeric material includes a conically tapered socket centered about the polar axis intermediate ends of the open end wherein the shell is a hollow titanium shell having an inner surface with a porous structure for receiving a portion of the polymeric material. The hollow titanium shell inner surface has at least one rib extending inwardly toward the conically tapered socket.

A method for coating an orthopedic implant made of a titanium or titanium alloy substrate with a cobalt-chrome molybdenum alloy uses multi-arc physical vapor deposition (MA-PVD). The substrate has a first bearing surface coated with a coating made of the deposited cobalt-chromium molybdenum alloy. The bearing surface slidably receives a second bearing surface of the prosthetic joint component. The MA-PVD cobalt-chromium molybdenum alloy coating forming the first bearing surface is made up of hexagonal close packed (HCP) grains having a columnar structure with a length of about 1 &#x3bc;m and a width of about 0.1 &#x3bc;m with the length of each HCP grains being oriented generally perpendicular to the titanium substrate bearing surface.

A method for improving the bond between a PEEK joint component and bone cement comprising roughening a surface of the PEEK component by air-blasting abrasive water-soluble particles against the component until an average surface roughness of 4 to 6 micrometers is attained and subsequently submerging the component in water to dissolve any residual particles.

Method of improving bond strength of polymeric implants with bone cement

A method of fabricating a medical implant component. The method may comprise producing a substrate from a first material in which the substrate has a bearing portion, and causing particles of a second material to be formed onto at least the bearing portion of the substrate. The second material may be formed from a biocompatible material and a carbide source, in which the carbide source is 6.17% or more of the second material by weight. The particles of the second material may be formed onto at least the bearing portion of the substrate by a predetermined spraying technique, a CVD process, a PVD process, or a carburization process. The biocompatible material may be cobalt chrome and the carbide source may be graphite.

Method for fabricating a medical component from a material having a high carbide phase and such medical component

A system and method for use in applying a coating of a desired material onto one or more medical implant components. The system may include one or more thermal sprayers and a rotatable holding fixture having a plurality of mounting stations each operable to hold at least one medical implant component. The fixture may be operable to rotate about a central axis and each mounting station may be operable to rotate about a respective mounting station axis. The fixture may be arranged adjacent to one or more thermal sprayers so that during operation one or more desired materials may be sprayed by the one or more thermal sprayers upon an outer surface of each of the medical implant components while the fixture rotates about the central axis and while simultaneously therewith each of mounting stations having a respective medical implant component rotates about the respective mounting station axis.

Multi-station rotation system for use in spray operations

A system and method for use in applying a coating of a desired material onto one or more medical implant components. The system may include a thermal sprayer and a rotatable holding fixture having a plurality of mounting stations each operable to hold at least one medical implant component. The fixture may be operable to rotate about a central axis and each mounting station may be operable to rotate about a respective mounting station axis. The fixture may be arranged adjacent to the thermal sprayer so that during operation the desired material may be sprayed by the thermal sprayer upon an outer surface of each of the medical implant components while the fixture rotates about the central axis and while simultaneously therewith each of mounting stations having a respective medical implant component rotates about the respective mounting station axis.

A method of fabricating a medical implant component. The method may comprise producing a substrate from a first material in which the substrate has a bearing portion, and spraying particles of a second material by use of a thermal type spraying process onto at least the bearing portion of the substrate. The second material may be formed from a biocompatible material and a carbide source, in which the carbide source is 6.17% or more of the second material by weight. The biocompatible material may be cobalt chrome and the carbide source may be graphite. The thermal type spraying process may be a plasma spraying process or a high velocity oxygen fuel spraying process.

Method for fabricating a medical component from a material having a high carbide phase

Methods for the production of monometal carbides are disclosed. A metal source and a carbon source are reacted under conditions suitable to produce a reaction product. The reaction product may comprise fully carburized monometal carbide and excess carbon, or an intermediate product comprising partially carburized monometal carbide in the presence or absence of excess carbon. The carbon content in the reaction product may then be adjusted in a controlled removal or addition process to produce a product the fully carburized monometal carbide having near stoichiometric carbon.
