A method is provided by a network element to execute a forwarding information base (FIB) manager to program a packet forwarding function of the network element. The FIB manager supports a hybrid control plane with software defined networking (SDN) and local control plane processes. The method includes receiving a request to configure a node reachability configuration element, where the node reachability element describes packet processing instruction for the packet forwarding function to forward packets toward a referred node, selecting a flow control agent to be updated for reachability to the referred node, and updating a logical forwarding information representation to encode a next hop identifier for the referred node.

Openflow configured horizontally split hybrid SDN nodes

A method is provided of managing traffic in a network. The method comprises applying (S) an indication to a packet being sent through the network, the indication being selected in dependence upon a level of traffic determined (S) for a subscriber associated with the packet and representing a per-hop behaviour to be applied subsequently to the packet. The indication is applied so as to manage at least to some extent traffic associated with the subscriber.

Method and apparatus for data transfer in a peer-to-peer network

A system, method, and network node for dynamically controlling throughput over an air interface between a mobile terminal and a radio telecommunication system. A Gateway GPRS Service Node (GGSN) receives a plurality of traffic flows for the mobile terminal and uses a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) module to determine a target delay class for each traffic flow. The GGSN signals the target delay class of each traffic flow to a Radio Network Controller (RNC) utilizing per-packet marking within a single radio access bearer (RAB). The RNC defines a separate virtual queue for each delay class on a per-RAB basis, and instructs a Node B serving the mobile terminal to do the same. The Node B services the queues according to packet transmission delays associated with each queue. A flow control mechanism in the Node B sets a packet queue length for each queue to optimize transmission performance.

Dynamic control of air interface throughput

There are provided a scalable method for mobility management applied to an IP-based network system including a plurality of routers and a plurality of servers, a part of which serve as a home routing manager (HRM), a part of which serve as local routing managers (LRM) for individual mobile nodes. The method at least comprises the steps of sending a first query about a routing address of a destination mobile node toward the HRM, based on an activation notification (AN) from an ingress access router (AR) of the plurality of routers, triggered by a source mobile mode, from an LRM receiving the activation notification; relaying the first query via one or more intermediate routing managers (IRM) closer to the HRM until the first query reaches the HRM; and in response to the first query, sending the routing address of the destination mobile node back to the ingress access router through the relay path from the HRM.

Routing manager hierarchy

A technique for registering a mobile terminal with an anchor node and for handling data packets after registration is provided. A method implementation of this technique comprises the steps of providing support for a plurality of mobility management protocols, wherein the mobility management protocols are deployed in parallel within a protocol stack of an anchor node, receiving, from a mobile terminal, a registration message, and selectively handling the registration message in accordance with the mobility management protocol associated with the registration message.

Technique for providing support for a plurality of mobility management protocols

A method and network node for dynamically controlling throughput over an air interface between a mobile terminal and a radio telecommunication system. The method detects a type of service being utilized by the mobile terminal, and dynamically selects a target delay for the traffic between a base station and the mobile terminal. The detecting may be done by a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) engine implemented in a core network node such as a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). When the mobile terminal activates a delay-sensitive service, the target delay is dynamically changed to a smaller value to reduce latency. When the mobile terminal deactivates all delay-sensitive services, the target delay is dynamically changed to a larger value to increase throughput.

There are provided a method, a network system, and a router capable of decreasing the chance of VRM or VLM changes so as to reduce signaling, and consequently contributing to better scalability. The method is applied to mobility management used in an IP-based network system, which contains a plurality of access routers (AR), location managers (LM) and routing managers (RM), through which a mobile node (MN) transmits and receives information. According to the method, a visited routing manager (VRM) where the MN is currently located monitors the MN, an AR currently communicating with the MN discriminates whether or not the MN is moving out of its connectivity range, and the VRM discriminates whether or not the MN is moving out of its control range. Then, the method switches mobility management over from the current AR to a new AR in accordance with the discrimination results, and switches mobility management over from the current VRM to a new VRM in accordance with the discrimination result.

VRM selection

The system includes a mobile node () communicating with a correspondent node (), a home agent node () managing the mobile node (), a proxy node () being located closer to the mobile node () than the home agent node () and relaying the packets from the mobile node () to the home agent node (), and a routing manager () managing a route of the packets. The proxy node () detects a trigger of a packet route optimization and notifies the routing manager (). The proxy node () establishes the optimized routing path according to a command received from the routing manager () and routes the packets through the established routing path using a secure method.
