Photographic processing apparatus comprises a combination of a surface processing stage and a replenishable tank processing stage. This allows advantage to be taken of the low quantities of processing solution that are characteristic of surface processing and the total immersion that is characteristic of tank processing.

Processing photographic material

Photographic material is processed in a sequence of stages by the application of solution to an upper surface thereof as the material is carried on endless belts beneath respective coated roller arrangements. Each roller arrangement is movably mounted in a slot so that the point along the stage at which the solution is applied to the photographic material can be varied, thereby to vary the time for which the material is subject to the processing treatment.

A method for processing a silver halide photographic material comprises the steps of developing, fixing and washing the photographic material. The fixing step is carried out using a fixing solution comprising thiosulfate ions, and the washing step is carried out by washing the material with an aqueous solution containing an oxidizing agent capable of reacting with thiosulfate. The oxidizing agent is present in an amount sufficient to precipitate any silver in the solution.

A fixing composition for processing a silver halide photographic material comprises a fixing agent, a sulfite stabilizer, an acid and a buffer. The composition has a pH greater than 5.4 and the buffer comprises at least 2.0 mol/l ammonium acetate.
