An antenna system internal to the device especially intended for small-sized mobile stations, the system having separate operating bands. The system is implemented as decentralized in a way that the device () has a plurality of separate antennas (-). Each antenna is based on (a) radiating element(s) on the surface of a dielectric substrate. The substrate can be, for example, a piece of ceramics or a part of the outer casing of the device. The antennas are located at suitable places in the device. The operating band of an individual antenna covers the frequency range used by one radio system, the frequency ranges close to each other and is used by two different radio systems or only the transmitting or receiving band of the frequency range used by a radio system. If the device has a shared transmitter and a shared receiver for the radio systems using frequency ranges close to each other, there can anyway be a separate antenna for each system or the antenna can also be shared. The antennas can be made very small, because a relatively small bandwidth is sufficient for an individual antenna, when there is a plurality of antennas. A good matching of the antenna is achieved on the whole width of each radio system, because the matching of a separate antenna having a relatively narrow band is easier to arrange than that of a combined multi-band antenna. No switches are needed in the structure for choosing a sub-band, which contributes to good efficiency for its part.

Multiband antenna system and methods

An adjustable multi-band planar antenna especially applicable in mobile terminals. In one embodiment, the feed of the antenna is connected by a multiple-way switch to at least two alternative points of the radiator element. When the feed point is changed, the resonance frequencies and thus the operating bands of the antenna change. In addition to varying the basic dimensions of the antenna, the distance between one feed point to another and a possible short-circuit point in the radiator, the value of the series capacitance produced by a reactive circuit that is formed between the feed point and switch, and the distance between the ground plane and the radiator, are parameters that may affect the antenna design.

Adjustable multi-band antenna and methods

An adjustable multi-band planar antenna especially applicable in mobile terminals and a radio device. The adjusting circuit () of the antenna is galvanically connected to a point (X) of the radiator, where the circuit can affect the places of at least two operating bands. The adjusting circuit comprises a multi-pole switch (), by which said radiator point can be connected to one of alternative transmission lines. For example, one of two transmission lines () is open and another shorted. A discrete capacitor (C) can be located between the separate conductor of the transmission line and an output pole of the switch as an additive-tuning element. The adjusting circuit further comprises a LC circuit () between the radiator () and the switch. Among other things, the lengths of the transmission lines, the values of the discrete components and the distance between the antenna short-circuit point (G) and the adjusting circuit connecting point (X) are then variables from the point of view of the antenna adjusting. Such values are calculated for these variables that each of the antenna operation bands separately shifts to a desired other place when the switch state is changed. The space required for the adjusting circuit is relatively small, and a relatively high efficiency is achieved for the antenna despite of the use of a switch.

Adjustable multiband antenna and methods

An adjustable monopole antenna especially intended for the mobile terminals. The adjusting circuit () of the antenna is located between the radiator () and the antenna port of a radio device and forms, together with the antenna feed conductor (), a feed circuit. This circuit comprises an adjustable reactance between the feed conductor and the ground in series with the feed conductor or in both of those places. For example, the feed conductor can be connected by a multi-way switch to one of alternative transmission lines, which are typically short-circuited or open at their tail end and shorter than the quarter wave, each line acting for a certain reactance. The antenna operating band covers at a time only a part of the frequency range used by one or two radio systems, in which case the antenna matching is easier to arrange than of a real broadband antenna. The space required for both the radiator and the adjusting circuit is relatively small. There is no need to arrange a coupling to the radiator for the antenna adjusting, which means a simpler antenna structure and thus savings in production costs.

Adjustable antenna and methods

A method and an arrangement for matching the antenna of a radio device in transmitting condition. The antenna impedance in the output of the power amplifier of a transmitter is adjusted by means of a &#x3c0;-shaped reactive matching circuit, the component values of which can be selected from a relatively wide array of the alternatives. The component values are selected using multiple-way switches, which only are located in the transverse branches of the matching circuit. The switches are set by the control unit, input variables of which being the SWR value provided by the directional coupler, the operating band used each time and a value of the transmitting power. The matching is based on an adjusting process to be executed at regular intervals, in which process the control unit tries different combinations of the switch states and finally selects the combination, which brings the lowest SWR value.

Methods and apparatus for matching an antenna

An antenna system internal to a radio device, the system comprising separate antennas and having separate operating bands. The system is implemented as decentralized in a way that each antenna is typically based on a small-sized chip component, which are located at suitable places on the circuit board and possibly on also another internal surface in the device. The chip component comprises a ceramic substrate and at least one radiating element. The operating band of an individual antenna covers, for example, the frequency range used by a radio system or only the transmitting or receiving band in that range. At least one antenna is connected to an adjusting circuit with a switch, by which the antenna's operating band can be displaced in a desired way. In this case the operating band covers at a time a part of the frequency range used by one or two radio systems.
