The invention relates to auxiliary systems ensuring functioning of alkaline fuel cell (AFC), in particular to a method and device for sorptive purification of air used in an AFC of carbon dioxide. In accordance with the invention, in the method for purifying air for a fuel cell, the starting air is passed through an adsorber with an adsorbent of carbon dioxide, then the adsorbent is regenerated. After utilization the adsorbent comprising hydrated oxides of transition metals is regenerated at a temperature of 60-120&#xb0; C. by the air spent in the fuel cell.

Method and device for purifying air for fuel cells

The invention relates to the field of alcohol-air fuel cells (FC) designed for use in portable radio-electronic equipment, such as cellular phones, notebooks, etc. In accordance with the invention a fuel cell FC comprises a housing with arranged therein a liquid catalytically active anode, an air catalytically active hydrophobic gas-diffusion cathode, a liquid alcohol-alkaline mixture filling the interior cavity of the housing and separating the anode and cathode, wherein the hydrophobic surface of the cathode faces air. The surface of the cathode facing the alcohol-alkaline mixture is coated with a layer of a polymer, for example polybenzimidazole, having conduction in respect to OH&#x2014; ions. A non-platinum catalyst on the base of metals Fe, Ni, Co, Ru, that is tolerant in respect to alcohol, is used as the cathode catalyst. A 4M KOH+4M alcohol mixture is used as the alcohol-alkaline mixture, and methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, ethylene glycol or glycerine is used as the alcohol in the alcohol-alkaline mixture. An Ni/Ru catalyst on a high surface area carbon carrier may be used as the anode catalyst, wherein Ni/Ru is present in the anode catalyst in the form of nanoparticles. An Ni/Ru catalyst obtained by the method of thermochemical synthesis on carbon black, electrodeposition, a chemical method, mechanical mixing may be used as the anode catalyst. Silver or pyropolymers of N4-complexes on a carbon carrier may be used as the cathode catalyst. The cathode catalyst may be mixed with polybenzimidazole.

Fuel cell for portable radio-electronic equipment

A fuel cell module (FC) comprises at least two substantially rectangular FCs, each of which includes an anode with a current collector and an insulating frame positioned along the periphery of the anode and forming an anode chamber, a cathode with a current collector and an insulating frame positioned along the periphery of the cathode and forming a cathode chamber, and an electrolyte chamber formed by an insulating frame and positioned between the anode and the cathode, the insulating frames along the periphery are provided with ports for the inlet and outlet of hydrogen, oxygen/air and electrolyte and with channels connecting the ports to corresponding chambers. The ports and channels are positioned on the upper and/or the lower sides of the insulating frames, and the current collectors are brought out of the FCs through the lateral sides of the insulating frames.
