A laser driver includes a pulse generator circuit, a pulse scaling circuit, and a power stage circuit. The pulse generator circuit generates a first voltage pulse of a first duration. The pulse scaling circuit includes a first transistor with a first gate electrode receiving the first voltage pulse, a capacitor having an electrode connected to a common terminal of a pair of resistors connected in series with the first transistor, and a second transistor with a second gate electrode connected to the first gate electrode and a second drain electrode coupled to a supply voltage via a resistor. Responsive to the reception of the first voltage pulse, a second voltage pulse of a second duration shorter than the first duration is generated at the second drain electrode. The power stage circuit converts the second voltage pulse into a current pulse driving at least one emission element of a laser display.

A powering circuit for a diode light source includes an inductor charged through an on/off switch. The charging occurs during a charging cycle for a controllable amount of time when the on/off switch is closed. The energy of the charged inductor is used to power the semiconductor light source by opening the on/off switch. In such a driving configuration, the ringing is nearly constant and thus may be suppressed using an appropriately configured circuit.

Pulsed driver for a diode light source

A driver for powering a pulsed light source of a scanning projector display is configured to provide a succession of powering electric pulses to the light source. Duration of the powering electric pulses is less than a pixel time interval during which a scanner of the projector display is directing the light beam to form a corresponding pixel of the image to be displayed. The amplitude of the powering electric pulses is proportionally higher, such that the light pulse has a pulse energy similar to the light energy provided by the light source when continuously driven through the pixel time interval. This enables the light source to be operated at a steeper portion of the electro-optical transfer curve, thereby improving the wall plug efficiency of the scanning projector display.

A controller for a tiltable MEMS reflector is configured to oscillate the reflector about X axis or about X and Y axes, and to obtain information about current and past tilt angles. The controller is configured to evaluate tilt angles of the tiltable MEMS reflector at a later moment of time based on the previously obtained information about the tilt angles of the tiltable MEMS reflector at the different earlier moments of time. The controller may be further configured to energize the light source providing a light beam to the tiltable MEMS reflector at the later moment of time with brightness and color corresponding to the brightness and color of a pixel that will be painted by the tiltable MEMS reflector at the later moment of time. A statistical model may be combined with machine learning to accurately predict future tilt angles of the tiltable MEMS reflector.

A method for generating a temporally multiplexed image to a viewer may include (1) receiving input data by a controller, (2) converting the input data by the controller into a sequence of instructions controlling at least functions of a subpixel array system and of an optical system, (3) generating subframes from the sequence of instructions which includes for each subframe: the subpixels to be illuminated at a given time and at a given position of a light deviator of the optical system that possesses at least one lateral-light-shifting degree of freedom, and (4) temporally multiplexing the subframes using the optical system, the one or more subframes designed to display an image to a viewer at the viewing region. Various other apparatus, systems, and methods are also disclosed.
