A SWIR hyperspectral imaging filter has serial stages along an optical signal path with angularly distributed birefringent retarders and polarizers. The retarders can include active retarders such as tunable liquid crystal birefringent elements, passive retarders such as fixed retarders, and/or combinations thereof. Distinctly different periodic transmission spectra are provided by different filter stages, each having multiple retarders, in particular with some stages having broad bandpass peaks at wide spectral spacing and other stages have very narrow closely spaced peaks. The respective spectra include at least one tunably selectable band at which the transmission spectra of the filter stages coincide, whereby the salutary narrow bandpass and wide spectral spacing ranges of different stages apply together, resulting in a high finesse wavelength filter suitable for spectral imaging. The filter may be configured to provide faster switching speed and increased angle of acceptance and may operate in the rage of approximately 850-1700 nm.

A video projector includes a reduced size spatial light modulator () that spatially modulates light from a light source () according to only a portion (e.g., &#xbd;) of a video frame at a time. A beam steerer () steers spatially modulated light from the spatial light modulator to a correspond region (e.g., upper half, lower half) of a projection screen/surface () and one or more lenses () insure that the spatially light modulator () is imaged onto the projection screen/surface ().

Thin microprojector with switched beam bender and method of operating the same

Disclosed are a system and method for microprojection that uses multiple imagers to produce a high resolution output image. Each of a set of imagers produces a portion of the final image. Relay lenses then tile the individual image portions together into a combined image. Because the height of the individual imagers is smaller than the height of a monolithic imager, they can fit into a very thin device. The combined image has a resolution equal to the sum of the resolutions of the individual imagers. The individual images are tiled together within the microprojector itself rather than on a projection screen. This allows the tiling to be adjusted once at the factory and set forever. In some embodiments, the light created for use by the microprojector is split by a polarizing beamsplitter. Each resultant polarized beam is then sent to an imager. Another polarizing beamsplitter combines the individual images.

A portable electronics device () having a self illuminating display () that reduces both the thickness of known displays and processing steps in the fabrication thereof is provided. The portable electronic device () includes an electrowetting display () having a plurality of layers () defining a cavity () containing a mixture of a first fluid () and a second fluid () positioned in the cavity (). First circuitry () is configured to be coupled to a first voltage source () for selectively repositioning the second fluid () in relation to the first fluid (). A first plurality of electroluminescent particles () are positioned within the second fluid (), and second circuitry () is configured to be coupled to a second voltage source () for selectively causing the electroluminescent particles () to emit photons (). Additional similar stacks of layers () may be added to provide a color display.

Antennas () or other radio frequency components that include an electrically configurable anisotropic element () are provided. According to certain embodiments the electrical configurable anisotropic element () includes a material () including carbon nanotubes or conductive nano-tubes or nano-wires () dispersed in a liquid crystal material or other medium with that can be aligned by an applied field.

A liquid crystal device comprises a cholesteric liquid crystal material interposed between a transparent front plate and a back plate. The cholesteric liquid crystal material is switchable between a transparent state and a reflective state in response to an electric field applied in a first direction. In the reflective state the material reflects light characterized by a first wavelength when no electric field is applied. Electrodes are provided for applying an electric field lied to the cholesteric liquid crystal material in the reflective state in a second direction distinct from the first direction. In this manner the cholesteric liquid crystal material is altered to cause the material to reflect light characterized by a second wavelength different from the first wavelength. A display device may thus be produced having pixels capable of a wide range of colors, thereby achieving a multicolored image for the display.

An apparatus () for recording a color image, comprises an image sensor () having a plurality of pixels () formed in a monolithic substrate. Each of the plurality of pixels () includes three floating gate semiconductor devices (). A color tunable filter () is positioned between a photosensitive semiconductor device () and an electromagnetic radiation source. A FET transistor () has a drain () connected to the cathode () of the photodiode (), and a source () connected to the anode () of the photodiode () and to control gates () of each of the three floating gate semiconductor devices (). The color tunable filter () allows all desired combinations of colors to pass while each of the three floating gate semiconductor devices () are respectively selected to store the color image.

Disclosed are image expanding lenses, display devices, and electronic devices incorporating the disclosed image expanding lenses. In accordance with a disclosed image expanding lens, the image viewed by the user is larger than the active area of the LCD panel underneath the lens, so that the border around, for example, the LCD display is hidden from viewing. The image expanding lenses may include a non-uniform transparent substrate, having for example, a wedge shape that may be the top surface of the display. The substrate in combination with prismatic films may bend the light output from an array of pixels so that the image hides the border of the display device. In this way, an electronic device can render an edgeless image to a viewer since the image of the electronic device is projected beyond an edge of the display device of the host electronic device.

Image expanding lenses, display devices and electronic devices

Light from a plurality of light sources is combined in a beam combiner. Photo-sensors are used to sense the intensity of each light source. Signals from the photo-sensors may be used to control the intensity of the light sources. The photo-sensors can be located in the beam combiner or located in the fringe of a collimated beam produced by the beam combiner. The illumination system has application in laser-scanning micro-projectors, for example.

Illumination method and apparatus having a plurality of feedback control circuit for controlling intensities of multiple light sources

A method and apparatus for controlling light intensity from two or more light sources. A timing scheme is used to modulate the light sources. Light from the light sources is combined to form a beam and a photo-sensor senses the beam. In a time interval when only one of the light sources is activated, the signal from the photo-sensor is monitored and used in a feedback control circuit to control the active light source.

Method and apparatus for intensity control of multiple light sources using source timing

A color display and solar cell device (), and methods for fabricating and operating the device. The device () includes a transparent light source () located behind a liquid crystal display () that includes a switchable transflector layer (). In a first embodiment, the liquid crystal display () also includes a tri-color pixelized filter (), the switchable transflector () is a switchable broadband transflector, and the transparent light source () is a white light source. In a second embodiment, the switchable transflector layer () is a tri-color selectable transflector and the transparent light source () is a tri-color selectable light source. In a third embodiment, the switchable transflector layer is a switchable broadband transflector and the transparent light source is a tri-color selectable light source. In a fourth embodiment, the switchable transflector layer () is a switchable pixelized tri-color transflector and the transparent light source () is a tri-color selectable light source.

Color display and solar cell device

The present invention provides a compact color illumination device () for emitting collimated light. The illumination device comprises a reflector cup (), a blazed diffraction grating () formed on the inner surface of the reflector cup, and a plurality of light emitting sources () positioned linearly in a focal plane of the reflector cup. Each light emitting source emits a different color of light that is incident on the blazed diffraction grating. The light emitted by the light emitting sources is reflected by the blazed diffraction grating, wherein the reflected light is collimated.

Compact color illumination device

Displays such as liquid crystal displays (), organic light emitting diode displays, and touch sensitive displays () are stacked with one or more solar cells () such that light passing through the displays will illuminate the light receiving active surface of the solar cells (). No reflector or polarizer need be used when the liquid crystal display () uses cholesteric or polymer dispersed liquid crystals. When using supertwist nematic or twisted nematic liquid crystals, a reflector () can be used that comprises a selective color reflector. The resultant display/solar cell can be utilized in combination with a device such as a wireless communications device () with the solar cell () providing electricity to the display (), the wireless communications device (), or both. A mask () can be used to occlude surface features on the solar cell () as appropriate to provide a substantially uniformly colored appearance.

An illuminated keypad () includes a substantially transparent keypad () having a plurality of actuator buttons (), a plurality of switches () residing substantially and correspondingly below the plurality of actuator buttons, a display laminate layer () residing between the plurality of actuator buttons and the plurality of switches, and a light source () reflectively illuminating a pattern of a symbol on the laminate layer by radiating light through the substantially transparent keypad. The display laminate can include a driver layer () having a conductor pattern configured in the pattern of the symbol to be displayed on the substantially transparent keypad, a transparent conductor layer (), and an electrically active ink layer () disposed between the transparent conductor layer and the driver layer.

A head-up display includes an image source, such as a laser scanner, a means for diffusing light and a transparent element that can include a holographic element. The laser scanner emits a visible light for generating an image. The means for diffusing light receives the visible light from the laser scanner to project the image thereon, and preferably apply gain thereto. The transparent element produces a virtual or a real image of the image from the means for diffusing light. In a vehicle, the head-up display is configured to reflect the image into the vehicle to provide a virtual image ahead of a driver.
