According to one embodiment, a rotorcraft front windshield comprises an optically-transparent material having a non-uniform thickness profile such that the front windshield is a first thickness at a first position and a second thickness at a second position, the first thickness being different from the second thickness.

Variable-thickness windshield

An external airbag for an aircraft includes an inflatable bladder having a top portion and a bottom portion, the top portion being generally adjacent to an exterior of the aircraft. A widthwise panel divides the inflatable bladder into a first cylindrical portion and a second cylindrical portion. The widthwise panel acts to restrict outward bulging of the inflatable bladder. An aperture in the widthwise panel may be used for allowing gas communication between the first cylindrical portion and a second cylindrical portion.

High efficiency external airbag for crash attenuation

An aircraft airbag inflation system includes an airbag mounted on an external surface of an aircraft. The airbag is configured to inflate in one of multiple stages prior to the aircraft crashing, and each stage is associated with a respective pressure. The system also includes multiple sensors disposed on-board the aircraft and configured to sense aircraft velocities and an aircraft attitude. The system also includes a controller disposed on-board the aircraft and configured to receive multiple signals from the sensors, the multiple signals representing the aircraft velocities and the aircraft attitude sensed by the sensors, determine a crash event for the aircraft based on the received multiple signals, the crash event including an aircraft sink rate, an aircraft attitude at crash time, and an aircraft distance from the impact surface, and determine a stage at which the airbag is to be inflated based on the crash event.

Inflating rotorcraft external airbags in stages

A crash attenuation system has an airbag inflatable generally adjacent to an exterior of the aircraft. The system includes a gas generator in fluid communication with an interior of the airbag. The system also includes a vent system having a vent passage supported by the aircraft, the vent passage being configured to allow gas to escape from within the airbag during an impact to a second set of airbags for flotation. The vent system also includes an actuator door for sealing the vent passage, thereby preventing gas from leaving the airbag. The actuator door is actuated by an actuator, the actuator being in fluid communication with the gas generator through an actuator duct. The system operates such that deployment of gas from the gas generator causes the actuator to inflate, thereby causing the actuator door to seal the vent passage. The gas generator is configured to re-inflate the airbag after the actuator door seals the vent passage.

Active vent and re-inflation system for a crash attentuation airbag

The external crash attenuation airbag includes an inflatable bladder which is inflatable to an exterior of an aircraft, so that the inflatable bladder is generally located between the aircraft and a crash surface when inflated. The airbag includes a vent configured to burst at a predefined burst pressure, the vent being located along a side portion of the inflatable bladder. The airbag also includes a vent support located approximate the vent, the vent support being configured to prevent deformation and therefore maintain the effectiveness of a venting area of the vent, and the vent support being rigid and annular and includes an upper portion and a lower portion that are hinged together around the vent.

A crash attenuation system has an airbag inflatable generally adjacent to an exterior of the aircraft. The system includes a gas generator in fluid communication with an interior of the airbag. The system also includes a vent system having a vent passage supported by the aircraft, the vent passage being configured to allow gas to escape from within the airbag during an impact. The vent system also includes an actuator door for sealing the vent passage, thereby preventing gas from leaving the airbag. The actuator door is actuated by an actuator, the actuator being in fluid communication with the gas generator through an actuator duct. The system operates such that deployment of gas from the gas generator causes the actuator to inflate, thereby causing the actuator door to seal the vent passage. The gas generator is configured to re-inflate the airbag after the actuator door seals the vent passage.

Active vent and re-inflation system for a crash attenuation airbag

A crash attenuation system for an aircraft includes an airbag carried by the aircraft that is inflatable generally adjacent an exterior of the aircraft. The airbag is in fluid communication with at least one vent passage for channeling gas from within the interior of the airbag to a region external to the airbag that allows the gas to escape without being obstructed by the airbag. A gas source is in fluid communication with the interior of the airbag for inflating the airbag. A vent valve is provided within the vent passage for controlling a flow of gas through the vent passage, thereby controlling deflation of the airbag. The vent valve is continuously adjustable to and between an open state, a closed state, and any number of partially open states.
