Method and system for internet censorship

A method and apparatus for establishing additional channels for a call between multi-task user terminals. A multi-task call (MTC) signaling module is used to receive requests for the addition or release of additional channels for a call. Through a signaling network, the module has access to the switches of a hybrid network for interconnecting edge switches connectable to MTC terminals. The MTC signaling module controls establishment or release of the connections between links of the paths through the hybrid network. Advantageously, an MTC terminal through its MTC signaling module can control the addition or release of channels through the hybrid network.

Signaling of multi-task calls carried by a hybrid circuit/packet network

In a packet switch for communicating packet switched data to and from a plurality of wireless mobile stations, a method and apparatus for automatically releasing resources tied up for communicating with dormant mobile stations. If the station has been dormant for a sufficiently long time, an alerting message is sent to the user of that mobile station. The user can then respond by requesting a release of the packet switched data (PSD) call currently connected to that mobile station or can request that the connection remain up. Advantageously, if the user of the station does not respond, then following a timeout the PSD call is released and the resources required for keeping the dormant call in existence are made available for new calls.

Managing wireless packet service resources

Resources within a hybrid packet-circuit network are dynamically reallocated based on demand. In response to an edge switch requesting additional first resources, a network manager evaluates a plurality of possible communication paths and potential network changes to determine an optimum configuration for providing the additional first resources. Network switches are instructed by the network manager to reallocate second resources such as packet-switched resources to first resources such as circuit-switched resources.

Apparatus, system and method for managing circuit and packet-switched calls on a network

A method of setting up calls over circuit-switched and packet-switched resources on a single network having the steps of receiving a request from a user for a call having one or more resources, and allocating the one or more resources among packet-switched, resources and circuit-switched resources associated with a communication network to set up the call. An apparatus for controlling telephone communications through a communication switch during intervals of call traffic volume in excess of a threshold call traffic volume includes: (a) a call traffic volume sensing device coupled with the communication switch and measuring the call traffic volume during selected intervals; and (b) a call traffic control device coupled with at least one of the communication switch and the call traffic volume sensing device. The call traffic control device cooperates with the communication switch to involuntarily terminate selected calls through the communication switch when at least one selected parameter is exceeded. Call data associated with one call is correlated from separate call records associated with the calling and called parties in which at least one of the parties is a wireless user. Statistical information is gathered based on whether one of the parties to the call subscribes to one call feature/service and the other party to the call subscribes to a predetermined call feature/service. Enhanced flexible alerting

Computers that exchange data over communication networks frequently wait for responses to messages and therefor use timers to control the amount of time that the computer will wait for a response to a command issued over a network. Communication network responsiveness varies as traffic loading on the network changes. Fixed-value timers that don't take network loading into account can inadvertently terminate communications if a response is not timely received. Varying or adjusting data communication timers according to data network responsiveness can prevent erroneous data communication session termination.

Method and system of enhancing emergency call services

This invention relates to methods and apparatus for handling incoming or intra-office calls when a telephone subscriber having a POTS, (Plain Old Telephone Service) telephone instrument and line connecting that customer to a serving switch, is connected to an Internet service provider for providing communications to the Internet. The bandwidth of the customer's line is divided into a lower band for providing communications, and a higher band for transmitting signaling and control information. When an incoming or intra-office call is received while the customer is connected to the Internet, the signal channel is used to transmit information which can be displayed to the called customer providing information about the call. If the called customer wishes to answer the call, the called customer can signal over the signaling channel a request that the incoming or intra-office call be completed. Otherwise, the called customer can signal over the signaling channel to the switch requesting that busy tone be returned to the caller, or that the caller be connected to voice mail. Advantageously, this arrangement provides an inexpensive system for allowing Internet users to be notified about incoming or intra-office calls, and to accept such calls at their discretion.
