A lithium transition metal oxide composition. The composition has the formula Li[LiNiMnCo]O, where a&#x2267;0.9, b&#x2267;0, c&#x3e;0, d&#x3e;0, e&#x3e;0, b+c+d+e=1, 1.05&#x2266;c/d&#x2266;1.4, 0.05&#x2266;e&#x2266;0.30, 0.9&#x2266;(a+b)/M&#x2266;1.06, and M=c+d+e. The composition has an O3 type structure.

Cathode compositions for lithium-ion batteries

A cathode composition for a lithium-ion battery having the formula Li[MMn]Owhere 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;1 and Mrepresents one or more metal elements, with the proviso that Mis a metal element other than chromium. The composition is in the form of a single phase having an O3 crystal structure that does not undergo a phase transformation to a spinel crystal structure when incorporated in a lithium-ion battery and cycled for 100 full charge-discharge cycles at 30&#xb0; C. and a final capacity of 130 mAh/g using a discharge current of 30 mA/g.

A cathode composition for a lithium ion battery that contains lithium having the formula (a) Li[MMn]Oor (b) Li[MMn]Owhere 0&#x2266;y&#x3c;1, 0&#x3c;b&#x3c;1 and 0&#x3c;c&#x3c;0.5 and Mrepresents one or more metal elements, with the proviso that for (a) Mis a metal element other than chromium.
