A granular perpendicular magnetic recording medium having a surface treated magnetic layer comprising an oxidized or nitrogenized boundary layer formed on the surface of the magnetic layer, wherein the magnetic layer comprises granular magnetic regions having oxygen and/or nitrogen-containing grain boundaries. In one embodiment, the granular perpendicular recording medium further comprises a soft magnetic layer below the surface treated granular magnetic layer and a protective overcoat over the surface treated granular magnetic layer. A method of manufacturing a granular perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes depositing a magnetic layer having granular structure over a substrate and subsequently surface treating the granular magnetic layer in an oxygen and/or nitrogen-containing atmosphere to produce an oxidized and/or nitrogenized boundary layer formed on the surface of the granular magnetic layer. The granular perpendicular magnetic recording medium of the present invention exhibits high Hc and SNR while exhibiting improved corrosion resistance and contact start-stop performance.

Granular perpendicular media with surface treatment for improved magnetic properties and corrosion resistance

A perpendicular recording medium having a magnetic layer comprising cobalt, platinum, and at least one of molybdenum and chromium. In a preferred embodiment, the perpendicular recording medium comprises granular magnetic regions having oxygen-containing grain boundaries. The magnetic layer of the present invention preferably exhibits improved corrosion resistance while maintaining the magnetic properties suitable for high density perpendicular recording.

Perpendicular media with improved corrosion performance

A magnetic recording medium on glass or Al substrates with film structures of CrV/NiAl/CrMo/CoCrTa/CoCrPtTaNbB and CrMo/CoCrTa/CoCrPtTaNbB exhibit high coercivity and high signal-to-medium noise ratio. The medium can be used for high-density longitudinal magnetic recording. Embodiments include forming a sub-seed layer on a NiP-plated aluminum substrate, and sequentially depositing a seed layer, an underlayer, an intermediate layer and a magnetic layer on the substrate. The magnetic layer contains at least six elements, including Co, Cr and B.

CoCrPtTaNbB alloy for magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium on glass or Al substrates with film structure of NiAl seed layer/CrMo underlayer/CoCrPtB magnetic layer/carbon overcoat, in which the magnetic layer has a substantially (10.0) crystallographic orientation, exhibits high coercivity, high signal-to-medium noise ratio and low transition jitter. The medium can be used for high-density longitudinal magnetic recording. Embodiments include forming a surface oxidized NiAl sub-seed layer on a glass or glass-ceramic substrate, and sequentially depositing a seed layer of NiAl, an underlayer of Cr or Cr-alloy, such as CrMo, and a CoCrPtB magnetic layer.

CoCrPtB medium with a 1010 crystallographic orientation

Magnetic recording media exhibiting enhanced SMNR are formed with an NiAlO sub-seedlayer for microstructural control of the underlayer to enable deposition and growth of a magnetic layer exhibiting a (10{overscore (1)}0)-predominant crystallographic orientation and small, uniform grain size. Embodiments include completely reactive sputter depositing a NiAlO sub-seedlayer on a glass-ceramic substrate and sequentially depositing thereon a NiAl seedlayer, a Cr or Cr-alloy underlayer, e.g., CrMo, a Co&mdash;Cr magnetic layer and a protective overcoat, e.g., carbon. The resulting magnetic recording media exhibit a high SMNR, high OW, narrow PW50, improved jitter and improved Hr.

Magnetic recording media with a nialox sub-seedlayer

High areal density magnetic recording media exhibiting high Hr and low medium noise are formed with a thin CoCrTa intermediate layer having a high Cr content, such as above 15 atomic % to about 20 atomic % Cr, e.g., about 16 to about 17 atomic % Cr. The high Cr content of the CoCrTa intermediate magnetic alloy layer provides a smooth lattice match transition for epitaxial growth of a magnetic layer thereon exhibiting high anisotropy, thereby achieving high Hr and high SNR. Embodiments include depositing the high Cr content CoCrTa intermediate layer at a thickness of about 5 to about 50 &angst; on a Cr-alloy underlayer.

High Cr, low saturation magnetization intermediate magnetic layer for high coercivity and low medium noise

A magnetic recording medium exhibiting high in-plane anisotropy at low Mrt is formed employing a NiAl seedlayer and a CrMn underlayer thereon. Embodiments include magnetic recording media with a CoCrPtTa magnetic alloy layer exhibiting a Hr greater than 2800 Oe with a Mrt no greater than 0.5 memu/cm.sup.2. The resulting media also exhibit high S* and low media noise.
