Crossing a winterline with a rapid-cycleline has been discovered to provide an unexpectedly simple and efficient way to create a modifiedwith a spring flowering habit. In one implementation, such a modifiedor its progeny is crossed with a second winterline to produce at plant having a winter flowering habit. This allows one to significantly shorten the development cycle for winter-floweringlines by conducting part of the breeding program with spring-flowering time cycles, then migrating the resultant germplasm back into a winter-flowering line.

Transgenic plants that are resistant toorare described as well as methods for producing such tranagenic plants. The transgenic plants include nucleic acid constructs that encode a chitinase polypeptide, a &#x3b2;-1,3-glucanase polypeptide, an osmotin polypeptide, and a pathogenesis-related-1 polypeptide.

The invention involves methods and materials related to the transformation of Brassica by particle bombardment. Specifically, the invention provides methods of preparing non-embryo Brassica tissue such that Brassica cells are capable of being cultured, transformed by particle bombardment, and regenerated into plants. In addition, this invention provides stably transformed Brassica cells as well as their progeny. This invention also provides methods of selecting Brassica tissue with liquid medium such that transformed Brassica cells are identified and regenerated into transformed Brassica plants.
