A valve seat for a pumping assembly. The valve seat includes a body including a gradient material structure that defines a strike face for the valve seat. The gradient material structure has a first material, a second material spaced from the first material, and a smooth compositional transition between the first material and the second material. In addition, the valve seat includes a bore extending through the body.

In addition, the valve seat includes an embedded structure embedded in the body so as to define, at least partially, a strike face of the valve seat. The composite joint is formed of a material configured to be fused to both the first structure and the second structure and form a hanger joint having a shear strength of at least 2 ksi when the material is fused to the outer surface of the first structure and an inner surface of the second structure.
