The invention provides filamentous organism-derived carbonaceous materials doped with organic and/or inorganic compounds, and methods of making the same. In certain embodiments, these carbonaceous materials are used as electrodes in solid state batteries and/or lithium-ion batteries. In another aspect, these carbonaceous materials are used as a catalyst, catalyst support, adsorbent, filter and/or other carbon-based material or adsorbent. In yet another aspect, the invention provides battery devices incorporating the carbonaceous electrode materials.

Filamentous organism-derived carbon-based materials, and methods of making and using same

Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) having configurations with spiral wound structures and with frame-and-plate structures are provided. Systems may allow for production of an electrical current that is at least partially generated by anodophilic microorganisms connected directly or indirectly to an electrode. A spiral wound or frame-and-plate type bioelectrochemical system may include an anolyte influent point, a catholyte influent point, electrodes, ion selective membranes, mesh separators, gas collection devices, an exterior containment vessel, and one or more external electrical devices.

Modular bioelectrochemical systems and methods

The present invention relates to the unexpected discovery of systems for capturing carbon dioxide and producing hydrogen gas. In certain embodiments, the system treats wastewater. In certain embodiments, the system captures and sequesters COas carbonate salts.

Carbon dioxide capture and storage electrolytic methods

A bioelectrochemical system device may be used to enhance groundwater pollutant chemical removal or degradation. Such a bioelectrochemical system may be inserted into the environment to be remediated through a variety of techniques, such as through insertion into wells or other access points, trench insertion, direct insertion, borehole insertion, or combinations thereof. In some aspects, the bioelectrochemical system device may have a hollow-tube configuration with an outer ring anode and inner ring cathode. In further aspects, the bioelectrochemical system device may have a modular form that can be combined with multiple other modules such one or more bioelectrochemical system devices.
