The present application relates to copolymer-silica hybrid aerogels as well as methods for the preparation thereof. The methods comprise hydrolyzing a silica precursor in an organic solvent to obtain a partially polymerized silica wet gel, reacting the partially polymerized silica wet gel with a copolymer of Formula (II) to obtain a copolymer-silica hybrid wet gel, reacting the copolymer-silica hybrid wet gel with a surface passivation agent and removing solvent from the copolymer-silica hybrid wet gel to obtain the copolymer-silica hybrid aerogel. The mechanical properties of the copolymer-silica hybrid aerogels can be further improved by blending cellulose nanofibrils into the hybrid aerogels. (II)

Copolymer-silica hybrid aerogels and methods for the preparation thereof

Disclosed is a method of printing an ultranarrow line of a functional material. The method entails providing a substrate having an interlayer on the substrate and printing the ultranarrow line by depositing ink on the interlayer of the substrate, the ink comprising the functional material and a solvent mixture that partially dissolves the interlayer on the substrate to cause the ink to shrink and sink into the interlayer on the substrate thereby reducing a width of the line.

Method of printing ultranarrow line

A method is disclosed for aligning layers in fabricating a multilayer printable electronic device. The method entails providing a transparent substrate upon which a first metal layer is deposited, providing a transparent functional layer over the first metal layer, depositing metal nano particles over the functional layer to form a second metal layer, exposing the metal nano particles to intense pulsed light via an underside of the substrate to partially sinter exposed particles to the functional layer whereby the first metal layer acts as a photo mask, and washing away unexposed particles using a solvent to leave partially sintered metal nano particles on the substrate.

Self-aligning metal patterning based on photonic sintering of metal nanoparticles

Methods are provided for fabricating photodetector arrays using passive matrix addressing technology. The photodetector arrays use a pair of switching diode and photo diode to overcome crosstalk issues within the passive matrix. The switching diode and the photo diode of each pixel may be connected using a cathode-to-cathode connection, or an anode-to-anode connection. The photodetector arrays are fabricated by assembling on a first substrate, an array of photodetector pixels comprising a switching diode and a photo diode, providing conductive lines for each row of the array and conductive lines for each column of the array, and attaching a second substrate to the first substrate. The photodetector array may also be fabricated by assembling on a first substrate an array of switching diodes, and assembling on a second substrate an array of photo diodes, and bonding the first and second substrates together.

Methods of manufacturing printable photodetector array panels

The present disclosure relates to conductors comprising a conducting member comprising silver and a functionalized organosiloxane network having at least one functional group capable of trapping silver or a silver ion as well as to methods of preparing the same. For example, the functionalized organosiloxane network can at least substantially inhibit dendrite formation between a first conducting member and a second conducting member. For example, the conductors may be used in an electronic circuit such as a printed electronic circuit.

Disclosed is a method of printing ultranarrow-gap lines of a functional material, such as an electrically conductive silver ink. The method entails providing a substrate having an interlayer coated on the substrate and printing the ultranarrow-gap lines by depositing ink on the interlayer of the substrate, the ink comprising the functional material and a solvent that swells the interlayer to cause the interlayer to bulge at edges of the ink to thereby define embankments that confine the ink.

Method of printing ultranarrow-gap lines

A process for depositing a metal on a substrate involves the use of two reduction reactions in a bottom-up based tandem manner starting from a substrate surface and working upward. A first reduction reaction starts on the substrate surface at ambient temperature, and a second reduction reaction, which is initiated by the reaction heat of the first reduction reaction, occurs in a reactive ink solution film coated on top, which becomes solid after the reaction. Gas and other small molecules generated from the reduction reactions, and the solvent, can readily escape through the upper surface of the film before the solid metal layer is formed or during post-treatment, with no or few voids left in the metal film. Thus, the process can be used to form highly conductive films and features at ambient temperature on various substrates.

Process for depositing metal on a substrate

A compact interrogator for the simultaneous interrogation of multi wavelength-modulated fiber optical sensors, includes a planar waveguide based demultiplexer receiving input signals from the sensors. An array of detectors is coupled to output waveguides of the demultiplexer corresponding to different nominal wavelengths. A tuning element matches the nominal wavelengths of the output waveguide to the input signals from the respective sensors to find the wavelengths of the individual sensors to be interrogated.

An integrated optical dynamic channel equalizer that can be employed to equalize the channel gain level in a WDM transmission line and monitor the optical channel performance. The device consists of a circulator, a dynamic gain equalizer chip and a controller. Due to the simplicity of the dynamic gain equalizer chip, which includes one 1&#xd7;n multiplexer/demultiplexer, an n-channel variable optical attenuator array (VOA-n), a partially transparent dielectric reflective means and an n-channel detector array, the device is very compact and can be fabricated at low cost. By placing a quarter wave plate between the n-channel variable optical attenuator array and the partially transparent reflective means in the dynamic channel equalizer chip, the device can be rendered polarization insensitive.

Compact hybrid integrated optical dynamic channel equalizer

The invention disclosed provides integral multilayered polymers with variable interlayer gaps, and processes for their manufacture. The materials thus produced consist of many layers of a polymeric material, which may be a single polymer or a blend of compatible polymers, separated by discontinuous narrow gaps containing air and/or a blowing agent. The layer density can be controlled within a wide range, typically 10 to 2000 layers/mm, while the gap width between the layers can be controlled either to &lE;100 nanometers (called nanolayered polymers) or &gE;1 micrometer (called microlayered polymers), depending on the process. These layered materials are mechanically strong and have excellent thermal and electrical, and sound insulation properties. Two distinct mechanisms were developed for producing such materials. A first process produces nanolayered polymers and involves first introducing a low degree of entanglement among some of the polymer chains and then breaking apart these entanglements using a blowing agent. The microlayer process involves the use of stress-induced nucleation to uniformly grow cells in the polymer containing dissolved blowing agent and force the cells to grow in a preferential direction.

Multilayered polymers and foams with variable sized interlayer gaps

The invention disclosed provides a method for inducing nucleation in a polymer by subjecting the polymer containing dissolved gas to an external stress generated, for example, by applying hydrostatic or mechanical pressure. The applied stress restricts the bubble growth so that the foamed materials have small cells and high cell density. Such microcellular foams can be produced over a wide low temperature range, i.e. from the temperature at which the polymer is conditioned with the blowing agent up to about the glass transition temperature of the polymer-blowing agent system. Stress induced nucleation can also be conducted at higher temperatures i.e. up to about the T of the neat polymer, leading to foams with larger cells. A variety of homogeneous and heterogeneous foams can be produced by this technique.

Manufacturing foams by stress-induced nucleation

The invention disclosed provides a method for inducing nucleation in a polymer by subjecting the polymer containing dissolved gas to an external stress generated, for example, by applying hydrostatic or mechanical pressure. The applied stress restricts the bubble growth so that the foamed materials have small cells and high cell density. Such microcellular foams can be produced over a wide low temperature range, i.e. from the temperature at which the polymer is conditioned with the blowing agent up to about the glass transition temperature of the polymer-blowing agent system. Stress induced nucleation can also be conducted at higher temperatures i.e. up to about the T.sub.g of the neat polymer, leading to foams with larger cells. A variety of homogeneous and heterogeneous foams can be produced by this technique.

The invention disclosed provides a method for producing ultramicrocellular polymer foams at low pressures. A polymer is saturated with a blowing agent at low temperatures and pressures within a short time period, due to retrograde vitrification. The blowing agent may be in the form of a gas or a volatile liquid. Polymer-blowing agent combinations are selected to provide a processing temperature/pressure in the area below the positive slope portion of the retrograde vitrification profile of the glass transition temperature of the polymer versus pressure. The polymer thus saturated has an exceptionally high blowing agent content, and is then foamed to produce materials with small cells and high cell density.
