A spectrally encoded fluorescence imaging system includes a multi-wavelength excitation light source emitting excitation light for illuminating a sample, optical components for introducing spectral encoding to focus different wavelengths of the excitation light at different positions in the sample to generate fluorescence at different, spatial positions, and band-shifting florescence imaging probes exhibiting excitation-dependent emission band, causing the fluorescence generated at different spatial positions to exhibit different band shifts, such that image information is encoded in the band-shifted fluorescence spectrums for parallel detection by a spectrometer or arrayed detectors operable to resolve different wavelengths.

Spectrally encoded imaging using band-shifting imaging probes

An imaging system includes a scattering assembly with a scattering medium positioned a first distance from an object to be imaged. The scattering medium includes a plurality of particles suspended in a suspension medium and at least one field source generating an electromagnetic field to manipulate an orientation, concentration, spatial distribution, and/or other properties of the plurality of particles. The imaging system further includes a detector including a plurality of detector elements positioned a second distance from the scattering medium and an image processing system configured to reconstruct an image of the object from an object image signal detected by the detector using object light scattered by the scattering medium and incident on the detector.

Systems and methods for imaging using reconfigurable particle assemblies

A self-referencing mobile-compatible spectrophotometric system, including at least one light source, at least one spectral detection unit, and at least one reference sample. The system is configured to apply light from the at least one light source to a sample and receive a reflected light from the sample, and apply light to the at least one reference sample, and receive a reference reflected light from the at least one reference sample.

A divided pulse nonlinear optical source may be generated by combining nonlinear wave generation techniques with pulse division that can divide a parent pulse into N divided pulses, each divided pulse separate temporally. The N divided pulses can be passed into a nonlinear optical medium to generate an output. The output can include at least one output pulse for each divided pulse. The center wavelengths of each output pulse can be tuned so that each may have a center wavelength that is the same as, or differs from, each other output pulse. In some embodiments, the output pulses may be combined to generate the output. The output can be power scalable and wavelength tunable.

Divided pulse nonlinear optical sources

A biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric step-index optical fiber includes a core and a cladding around the core. The core is made from a core material fabricated by bonding a citric acid and at least a first monomer using a synthesis process. The cladding is made from a cladding material fabricated by bonding the citric acid and at least a second monomer using the synthesis process. The core has a refractive index higher than that of the cladding, while a difference between an initial modulus of the core and the cladding is preferably less than 30% and a difference between the biodegradation rates of the core and cladding is preferably less than 30% after about 4 weeks. Optical properties of the core and cladding are tunable by adjusting monomer ratios, choices of monomers or cross-linking degrees.

Flexible biodegradable polymeric step-index optical fiber

Embodiments of the invention provide Raman spectroscopy methods and devices that exploit high quality factor (Q) resonators to enhance Raman signal by several orders of magnitude over the signal typically expected for Raman methods. Embodiments typically include one or more resonators, typically microtoroid microresonators. Embodiments also take advantage of Rayleigh scattering using these microresonators. Embodiments may be particularly useful for non-labeled nanoparticle sensing.

Resonator enhanced raman spectroscopy

Devices for reflectance spectroscopy, processes of assembling devices for reflectance spectroscopy, and health care processes of using reflectance optical spectroscopy devices are disclosed. The devices include a light source arranged and disposed to apply broadband light to sample, and a light-receiving feature configured to receive reflected light produced by the applying of the broadband light to the sample. The light-receiving feature is arranged and disposed to direct the reflected light to an optical detection system and isolate the reflected light from the broadband light. The optical detection system is capable of differentiating individual frequencies of the reflected light. The processes of assembling include removably positioning the devices on electronic devices. The health care processes include positioning the devices.

Mobile reflectance optical spectroscopy device and process of using and assembling mobile reflectance optical spectroscopy device

We present a method for parallel axial imaging, or z-microscopy, utilizing an array of tilted micro mirrors arranged along the axial direction. Image signals emitted from different axial positions can be orthogonally reflected by the corresponding micro mirrors and spatially separated for parallel detection, essentially converting the more challenging axial imaging to a lateral imaging problem. Each micro mirror also provides optical sectioning capability due to its finite dimension.

Z-microscopy

Embodiments of the invention provide a device called a 'G-Fresnel' device that performs the functions of both a linear grating and a Fresnel lens. We have fabricated the G-Fresnel device by using PDMS based soft lithography. Three-dimensional surface profilometry has been performed to examine the device quality. We have also conducted optical characterizations to confirm its dual focusing and dispersing properties. The G-Fresnel device can be useful for the development of miniature optical spectrometers as well as emerging optofluidic applications. Embodiments of compact spectrometers using diffractive optical elements are also provided. Theoretical simulation shows that a spectral resolution of approximately 1 nm can be potentially achieved with a millimeter-sized G-Fresnel. A proof-of-concept G-Fresnel-based spectrometer with subnanometer spectral resolution is experimentally demonstrated.

Compact spectrometer including a diffractive optical element with dual dispersion and focusing functionality

Apparatus and methods of four wave mixing (FWM) holography are described, including illuminating a sample with a first beam, a second beam, and a third beam, and combining the generated FWM signal with a reference beam at a imaging device to obtain holographic image data. In some examples, the first and second beams may be provided by a single pump-probe beam. The third beam may be a Stokes beam or an anti-Stokes beam. A representative example is coherent anti-Stokes Raman holography (CARS holography), which includes illuminating a sample with a pump/probe beam and a Stokes beam to obtain a CARS signal from the sample; and combining the CARS signal with a reference beam to obtain a CARS hologram.

Holographic methods for recording fast movies whose speed is limited by the laser pulse duration if the recording material has sufficient sensitivity to reliably record a frame of the fast event with a single pulse. The method we describe uses the selectivity of multiplexed holograms to resolve frames that are recorded with adjacent pulses. Specially designed pulse generators are used to generate the signal and reference pulse trains. We experimentally demonstrate the system by making movies of laser induced shock waves with a temporal resolution of 5.9 ns, limited by the pulse width of the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser used in the experiments.
