The present disclosure relates to plaster boards and methods for making them. For example, one aspect of the disclosure is a plaster board comprising one or more continuous layers of material disposed within a body of hardened plaster material, the first side and second side of each continuous layer of material being substantially covered by the hardened plaster material. In certain such embodiments, each continuous layer of material includes a polymer (e.g., a damping polymer) disposed on a carrier sheet. Another aspect of the disclosure relates to a method for making a plaster board that involves drying a wet body of plaster material while a continuous layer of material or precursor therefor is disposed within it.

Disclosed herein are speaker assemblies and acoustic devices comprising a panel having a long side and a short side, at least one transducer configured to excite the panel at a plurality of excitation locations on the panel to generate a wave having a wave front substantially perpendicular to the long side and propagating toward the short side of the panel and, optionally, at least one attenuating component mounted to the panel. Methods for generating an acoustic sound are also disclosed herein.

Methods of conveying a glass ribbon are provided that each includes the step of conveying the glass ribbon over a support device with a cushion of fluid supporting the glass ribbon over the support device. Each method further includes the step of monitoring a physical contact event between the glass ribbon and the support device by detecting an acoustic signal associated with the physical contact event. In further examples, glass ribbon conveying apparatus are provided that each includes a support device configured to support a glass ribbon over the support device with a cushion of fluid. Each apparatus further includes an acoustic sensor configured to monitor a physical contact event between the glass ribbon and the support device by detecting an acoustic signal associated with the physical contact event.

Methods and apparatus for conveying a glass ribbon

Embodiments disclosed herein include a device with an integrated acoustics function that includes a patterned touch screen cover, an acoustic thin film, a plurality of electrodes, and a substrate. In some embodiments, the substrate is coupled to the acoustic thin film and reduces heat loss from the acoustic thin film through the substrate. The acoustic thin film may be coupled to the patterned touch screen cover and conducts an oscillating electrical current provided by the plurality of electrodes, thereby acting as a nano-scale acoustic generator. In still some embodiments, the patterned touch screen cover provides an array of microspeakers and a viewing area, where the array of microspeakers is disposed around a perimeter of the patterned touch screen cover.

Structure with integrated acoustics function

An ultrasonic transducer assembly includes an ultrasonic transducer, an ultrasonic booster, an ultrasonic probe, and a booster cooling unit. The ultrasonic booster is connected to the ultrasonic transducer to amplify acoustic energy generated by the ultrasonic transducer and transfer the amplified acoustic energy to the ultrasonic probe. A seated end of the ultrasonic probe is positioned in a probe seat of the ultrasonic booster. The booster cooling unit is positioned to regulate the temperature of the probe seat of the ultrasonic booster such that the assembly supports a temperature dependent press-fit engagement of the seated end of the ultrasonic probe and the probe seat of the ultrasonic booster. The temperature dependent press-fit engagement is such that the seated end of the ultrasonic probe can be reversibly moved in and out of the probe seat at an elevated temperature Tand is fixed in the probe seat at room temperature T.

A method of forming a cladding portion of an optical fiber preform assembly includes positioning a glass core cane in a mold cavity and loading the mold cavity with silica glass soot. The silica glass soot is compressed in an axial direction as the vibratory energy is applied to the mold body to form a soot compact around the glass core cane, wherein the soot compact is the cladding portion of an optical fiber preform assembly and the glass core cane is a core portion of the optical fiber preform assembly.

A mesoporous, transition metal oxide material having an average pore diameter ranging from 2 to 20 nm, a basic surface character defined by an isoelectric point&#x3e;pH 7, and a specific surface area greater than 50 m/g can be incorporated into a NOsensing device as a NOfilm. The mesoporous, transition metal oxide material includes an oxide of yttrium, lanthanum and/or cerium, and can be formed using a surfactant-templated self-assembly process.

NOx adsorptive films for NOx sensor technologies

Both a method and apparatus for determining internal discontinuities or inhomogeneities in a green or fired ceramic honeycomb structure is provided. In the method of the invention, an ultrasonic transmitter is positioned adjacent to, but not in contact with, the honeycomb structure. The transmitter propagates an ultrasonic wave, of preferably less than 5 MHz, through the honeycomb structure which is received, filtered and analyzed to determine the presence or absence of internal discontinuities or inhomogenieties. The ultrasonic transmitter generates an ultrasonic wave of less than five megahertz to provide a relatively high signal-to-noise ratio in the ultrasonic wave propagated through the structure. The device of the invention may include an array of ultrasonic transmitters and receivers that generate simultaneously transmit and receive ultrasonic signals throughout the ceramic honeycomb structure as it is moved relative to the array such that the structure is quickly and efficiently scanned for discontinuities or inhomogenieties.

A method of applying ultrasonic acoustic energy to a glass melt by monitoring a glass melt temperature Tand transferring ultrasonic acoustic energy from an ultrasonic transducer to the glass melt at a controller power Pand a controller frequency vthrough an ultrasonic probe positioned in the glass melt is provided. According to the method, the controller power Pis controlled in response to at least (i) the monitored glass melt temperature Tand (ii) a reference glass melt temperature T. The controller frequency vis controlled in response to at least (i) one or more input parameters from a temperature-viscosity curve characterizing the glass melt, (ii) one or more input parameters from one or more temperature dependent impedance response models of the glass melt, and (iii) &#x394;Z, where &#x394;Z represents a degree to which an impedance condition Zof the ultrasonic probe differs from a reference impedance Zwhen the ultrasonic probe is positioned in the glass melt. Systems for applying ultrasonic acoustic energy to glass melts are also contemplated.

Laser-based ultrasonic (LBU) systems and methods for measuring at least one material property of a ceramic cellular ceramic body during thermal processing are disclosed. The method includes subjecting the ceramic cellular ceramic body to a temperature cycle within an interior of an oven. For a plurality of temperatures within the temperature cycle, the cellular ceramic body is irradiated with a modulated laser beam to generate acoustic waves in the cellular ceramic body over a plurality of acoustic paths. The method also includes sequentially irradiating the cellular ceramic body using a detection laser beam so that the acoustic waves are detected. The method also includes calculating from the detected acoustic waves at least one material property of the ceramic cellular body as a function of temperature.

Laser-based ultrasonic measurements of cellular ceramic bodies during thermal processing

Systems () and methods for measuring and displaying a visual and/or graphical representation of the specific modulus (E/&#x3c1;) of a cellular ceramic body (), such as those used to form particulate filters, are disclosed. The ultrasonic measurement system employs an ultrasonic transmitter (T) and an ultrasonic receiver (R) adjacent to, but spaced apart from respective ends () of the ceramic body. Multiple ultrasonic waves () are sent through corresponding multiple longitudinal portions (P) of the honeycomb structure (), where adjacent longitudinal portions overlap. Time of flight (TOF) measurements (TOF, TOF), along with other parameters describing the ceramic body, allow for the measurement of the sonic speed (c) of the ultrasonic waves that pass through the ceramic body as well as the attenuation (IR). The specific modulus is then calculated from the square of the sonic speed (C). The high resolution of the ultrasonic measurements allows for improved evaluation of the manufacturing process.

Systems and methods for measuring the specific modulus of cellular ceramic bodies

Both a system and method for detecting the presence or absence of internal discontinuities or inhomogeneities in a fired or green ceramic honeycomb structure is provided. The system includes a membrane disposed over a surface of the honeycomb structure, at least one ultrasonic transmitter that engages the membrane and transmits ultrasonic waves into the honeycomb structure, a translation assembly connected to the ultrasonic transmitter for sliding said transmitter across said membrane in a predetermined pattern, and an ultrasonic receiver that receives a modulated response from the ultrasonic waves transmitted into the honeycomb structure. The membrane is preferably plastic sheet material, such as polyester, having a temporary adhesive on one side and a thickness that is about one-quarter of the wavelength of the ultrasonic waves in order to avoid attenuation of the modulated response. In the method, the plastic sheet material is applied over the surface of the honeycomb structure via the temporary adhesive and the ultrasonic transmitter is simultaneously actuated while the translation assembly continuously slides the ultrasonic transmitter over the plastic sheet material in a predetermined scanning pattern.
