A vacuum generation system and method utilizes a dual-action piston-cylinder vacuum generation system to evacuate a vacuum storage. Saturated steam of higher than ambient pressure is inserted into a condensation cylinder with two chambers separated by a movable piston. Steam moves the piston to fill one chamber while expel gaseous content and condensate out of the other chamber. Steam is then condensed to a rough vacuum (RV) state by cooling. By repeated operations of inserting and condensing steam in each chamber alternatively, a sustained vacuum generation is achieved. A multi-level vacuum storage is also disclosed with a high vacuum (HV) storage placed inside a rough vacuum (RV) storage to reduce leakage as well as mechanical stresses. The vacuum generation system and method is extended for creating a prime mover or actuator to drive vacuum pumps maximizing thermal energy usage for increased vacuuming capacity.

System and method for multi-level vacuum generation and storage

A system and method for vacuum distillation and desalination contains integrated vacuum generation. Latent heat and a vacuum produced with steam condensation are used for distillation and desalination of liquid. The distillation and desalination system could comprise a spray evaporator and a condenser for receiving a feed stream for distillation or desalination. Produced are water flow condensate and concentrated liquid flow. A vacuum pump is actuated with condensation-induced dual-action piston-cylinder vacuum generation technology. The vacuum generator is configured to transfer latent heat from condensing steam vapor in its cylinder to the feed stream. Steam is also configured to transfer latent heat directly to the feed stream circulated through evaporators and condensers. A distillation and desalination method with active vacuuming and self-distillation in staggered multi-stage arrangement provides for efficient energy recovery. Use of multi-stage arrangement maximizes thermal energy usage for increased distillation capacity and applicability.

Vacuum distillation and desalination

A method and apparatus for forming three-dimensional patterns by depositing a crystalloid material onto substrate in a layer by layer fashion. The apparatus includes a computer responsive for controlling the material depositing rate and the three-dimensional relative movement between the depositing head and the substrate. The controlling information comes from the sliced CAD model of the part. For each cross-section, the depositing head plots the boundary and the interior while the building material comes out of the head. The crystalloid material deposited on the substrate or previous layer of the part rapidly freezes forming a new layer of the part. The material can be deposited by a continuous extruding device or a drop-on-demand device. Where necessary, support structure is built in the same way but with material of a different melting point. The ambient temperature is accurately controlled to a certain low point in order to make the deposited material flow to a certain extent and freeze after a short time. The preferred crystalloid material is water or brine which does not pollute the environment. However, the invention encompasses the use of other crystalloid materials.

Method and apparatus for rapid freezing prototyping

In one embodiment, a device for generating ultra-high precision rectilinear movement based on aerostatic suspension and magnetic traction, the device including a nut, a leadscrew, a thrust bearing, a contactless motor, and feedback drive electronics. The contactless motor provides the actuation by turning the leadscrew which is made of magnetically soft materials and has a pitched helical groove machined on its surface. The leadscrew passes through the core of the nut which is free to move in a rectilinear motion on a aerostatically suspended guide. The nut, also made with magnetic material, has a matching helical groove in its core so that a closed magnetic circuit is formed between the grooves of the leadscrew and the nut. The closed circuit in turn provides the necessary magnetic traction to move the nut in a rectilinear fashion. A primary aerostatic suspension is utilized to stabilize and center the leadscrew and nut transversally. A secondary transversal stabilization is provided by the thrust bearing to center the leadscrew in the axial direction. The nut is vibrationally isolated and can be rectilinearly moved with precision. Thus, all surface friction is eliminated, thereby reducing friction to that generated by air.

Low friction, high precision actuator

An optical displacement measuring apparatus utilizing triangulation, includes a laser for projecting a laser light beam with a first optical axis onto a surface of an object whose displacement is to be measured; an array of photodetectors for receiving light reflected from the object and for generating a positional signal as an image displacement .delta.; a condensing lens for receiving the light reflected from the object and for supplying the reflected light to the detector array along a second optical axis intersecting the first optical axis at angle .theta., the detector array being inclined at an angle .phi. with respect to the second optical axis; a determining device for non-linearly determining surface displacement  as a function of the image displacement .delta. and the angles .phi. and .theta., with the relationship between the image displacement .delta., the surface displacement  and the angles .phi.and .theta. always being identical, regardless of the angle .phi..
