According to an embodiment of the present invention, a data storage device comprising a motor having a stator is disclosed. The stator may include a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite to the first surface; and a n-phase winding arrangement having n phase windings; wherein each phase winding comprises m flat fractional-pitch coils arranged on the first surface of the substrate such that the coils are spaced apart uniformly along a closed loop and connected in series; wherein each coil together with an angular section of the substrate between the coil and an adjacent coil of the same phase winding defines a stator pole-pair; and wherein m is an integer larger than 1.

The present invention provides for a flexural pivot that can be fitted within a cavity of an actuator. The pivot includes a first member that can be coupled to the wall defining the cavity and a second member that can be mounted to the disc drive housing component of the disc drive. At least two leaves join external surfaces of the first member to the second member. The present invention offers a flexural pivot that can be easily incorporated with rotary actuators traditionally designed for use with a ball bearing pivot cartridge. In addition, it avoids the difficulties encountered by conventional designs when trying to assemble intersecting flat springs within a cylindrical sleeve. Furthermore, in comparison with conventional flexural pivots that are located outside the actuator body, the present invention provides a compact pivot that can be mounted substantially in a cavity of the actuator body such that the center of rotation of the actuator is located nearer the center of mass.

Flexural pivot for rotary disc drive actuator

The present invention relates to controlling an actuator for positioning a read/write head in storage devices such as disk drives. More specifically, the invention relates to using a sensor to detect the disk vibration amplitude perpendicular to the disk surface, and using feed forward control to cancel or counteract the tendency of the read/write head to deviate off-track due to disk vibration. Various approaches are proposed to detect the disk vertical vibration.

Active control system and method for reducing disk fluttering induced track misregistrations

An actuator assembly for positioning read/write heads above a data storage media comprises a pivotally mounted carriage arm assembly with a voice coil and a magnetic device having a plurality of poles for generating a magnetic field. The voice coil is positioned with its effective portions crossing through the magnetic field to generate at least one pair of driving forces in a direction substantially orthogonal to a seeking direction of the read/write heads. The carriage arm driven by said pair of forces has substantially no reacting force generated onto the pivot so that the servo bandwidth of the head positioning assembly can be improved and achieves a high degree of head positioning accuracy.
