High powered lasers of substantially any wavelength produced by certain processes including the process of providing a structure comprising a substrate with an epi structure thereon comprising a gain region with multiple quantum wells, a mirror stack coupled to the gain region, and a conductive layer coupled to the mirror stack; dividing the conductive layer into a conductive, central area and one or more dielectric, peripheral areas; attaching a conductive plate to the conductive layer; thinning the substrate to improve the passage of light therethrough to produce a substrate remnant; and attaching an electrode to the substrate remnant.

High-power surface emitting laser and fabrication methods thereof

A VCSEL-based monolithic optical pickup system for use with optical recording media with a retaining member, a plurality of VCSELs disposed on the retaining member for emitting laser beams, a plurality of detectors disposed on the retaining member for receiving reflected laser beams, and a stepped micro-mirror for reflecting laser beams emitted by the plurality of VCSELs toward optical recording media and for reflecting laser beams reflected from the recording media toward the plurality of detectors. The VCSELs and detectors can be disposed in laser/detector pairs wherein each detector surrounds its respective VCSEL. The system can incorporate upstanding VCSELs each with a sloped and mirrored side surface and with a detector disposed adjacent to the side surface whereby a laser beam emitted by the VCSEL can be directed to an optical recording media, then reflected from the optical recording media onto the side surface of the VCSEL, and then reflected by the side surface of the VCSEL onto the detector adjacent to the side surface of the VCSEL.

Methods and apparatus are provided for retrieving encoded information from data tracks on an optical disk using an array of microlasers as the illumination sources, an array of micro-scale photo detectors as the detection elements, and a bilens (BL) or a holographic optical element (HOE) as the main optical component. Multiple configurations are provided to position microlasers and photo detectors together on a mobile laser/detector block (LDB). The microlasers and detectors may be arranged in a hexagonal lattice relationship for an optimally compact arrangement. Laser beams generated by the surface-emitting microlasers are guided by the BL onto the optical disk (OD) surface. The reflected light is collected by the same BL or HOE, shifted, and then directed back onto the respective photo detectors on the LDB. Illumination, detection and alignment methods and apparatus for tracking, focusing, and magnification servo controls are also incorporated on the LDB.

Optical pickup and servo control system for digital data storage

A confocal scanning imaging device for viewing an object, includes illumination means including an array of independently addressable microlasers, detection means including an array of detectors for detecting light from an object to which light from the illumination means has been directed. The array of microlasers and the array of detectors are combined into a single array, such as on a single chip, and in a pattern constructed and arranged so that different detectors are adjacent each microlaser so that light from an illuminated object may be directed back to the vicinity of the illuminating microlaser and be detected by the adjacent detector(s). There is optical means for directing light generated by the microlasers onto an object and for directing light from an object so illuminated onto detectors adjacent the illuminating microlaser. The optical means includes a bilens and a matching lens system including two objective lenses. The system is constructed so that the relationships are as follows:
