An electric vehicle includes a reconfigurable energy storage system with a first submodule and a second submodule. An interface circuit is operable to transfer a charging power to the reconfigurable energy storage system from a charging station that is external to the electric vehicle. A switching circuit is operable to electrically arrange the first submodule and the second submodule in series or in parallel. A diode is operable to convey the charging power between the first submodule and the second submodule while the reconfigurable energy storage system is arranged in series and the charging power is present. A bias circuit is operable to maintain a reverse bias across the diode while the reconfigurable energy storage system is arranged in series and the charging power is absent.

A method and system for estimating air mass per cylinder of an internal combustion engine is provided. An output signal from a MAF sensor is digitally processed to provide an estimate air mass per cylinder (APC). The system includes the MAF sensor; a data acquisition unit configured to receive an output signal from the MAF sensor and produce a sampled signal having a sampling rate greater than one sample per firing event; a multiple band pass (MBP) filter configured to remove signal components caused by airflow pulsations and oscillations through the MAF sensor; an envelope detector configured to detect the lower and upper envelopes of the MBP filtered signal; a MAF estimator configured to estimate a mass airflow based on the detected lower and upper envelopes; a signal decimator; a low pass filter; and a APC converter to converted the low pass filtered signal into an estimated APC.

A method for cold start emissions diagnostic of a catalytic treatment device of an internal combustion engine includes determining a torque reserve; determining a catalyst light off (CLO) state; integrating the total torque reserve over a time period established by the CLO state; determining if a value from the integration exceeds an integration threshold; and if the value from the integration exceeds the integration threshold, indicating that the cold start emissions diagnostic is positive.

Method for cold start emissions diagnostic

Rationality diagnostic techniques for an intake oxygen sensor are utilized to detect sensor malfunction. A non-intrusive diagnostic technique includes passively detecting when an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve position crosses low/high position thresholds, whereas an intrusive diagnostic technique includes actively commanding the EGR valve to predetermined low/high positions. During a period after the EGR valve position reaches/crosses at least one of the low/high positions/position thresholds, respectively, maximum and minimum intake oxygen concentration is monitored. When the EGR valve position has crossed both the low/high positions/position thresholds and a difference between the maximum and minimum oxygen concentrations is less than a respective difference threshold, a malfunction of the intake oxygen sensor is detected. A malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) could be set to indicate the malfunction. The intrusive technique is additionally or alternatively implemented, such as part of a verification or backup to the non-intrusive technique.

Intake oxygen sensor rationality diagnostics

A control system for an engine of a vehicle includes an adder module that determines a temperature sum based on a sum of a plurality of temperatures determined based on (i) a plurality of operating parameters of the vehicle and (ii) a plurality of predetermined values calibrated for determining an estimated temperature at a location within an exhaust system of the vehicle. A temperature difference module determines a temperature difference based on the temperature sum and a previous value of the temperature difference. An estimating module determines the estimated temperature at the location within the exhaust system based on the temperature difference and a reference temperature. An actuator control module selectively adjusts at least one engine actuator based on the estimated temperature.

Exhaust system temperature estimation systems and methods

A control system for an engine of a vehicle includes an adder module that determines a pressure sum based on a sum of a plurality of pressures determined based on (i) a plurality of operating parameters of the vehicle and (ii) a plurality of predetermined values calibrated for determining an estimated pressure at a location within an exhaust system of the vehicle. An estimating module determines the estimated pressure at the location within the exhaust system based on the pressure sum and a reference pressure. An actuator control module selectively adjusts at least one engine actuator based on the estimated pressure.

Exhaust system pressure estimation systems and methods

An engine system and method for variable valve lift (VVL) diagnostic techniques are provided. In one exemplary implementation, the techniques include receiving, at a controller, a camshaft position signal indicative of detected edges of teeth of a camshaft toothed member that is coupled to a camshaft of an engine. The camshaft is configured to actuate a VVL system, which is configured to control a lift of a valve of the engine. The techniques also include calculating, at the controller, a camshaft speed signal indicative of a rotational speed of the camshaft based on the camshaft position signal. A valve stuck index (VSI) value is then calculated, at the controller, based on the camshaft speed signal. The techniques also include determining, at the controller, whether the valve is stuck based on a comparison of the VSI value to a predetermined threshold.

Variable valve lift diagnostic techniques based on camshaft speed

A technique can include receiving, at a controller for a vehicle, the controller including one or more processors, a signal indicative of a pressure in an intake manifold of an engine of the vehicle. The vehicle can include a supercharger configured to supply pressurized air to the intake manifold. The supercharger can be driven by a crankshaft of the engine via a belt. The technique can include estimating, at the controller, a frequency of the signal to obtain an estimated frequency. The technique can include determining, at the controller, whether the belt is slipping based on a comparison between the estimated frequency and a predetermined frequency. The technique can also include outputting, at the controller, a notification when the belt is determined to be slipping.

Techniques for detecting supercharger belt slip

A method and arrangement is provided for estimating an initial value for an internal battery temperature of a vehicle using a four zone process that determines which of a predetermined set of time zones correlates with a measured period of time for an engine of the vehicle being in an engine-off condition. Once the time zone is determined, an initial estimated value of the internal temperature of the battery is determined as a function of a set of parameters correlated with the determined time zone. The set of time zones include a holding time zone, a model based estimation time zone which is greater in time than the holding time zone, a first self-adjustment zone which is greater in time than the model based estimation time zone, and a second self-adjustment time zone which is greater in time than the first self-adjustment time zone.

Arrangement for determining an initial internal battery temperature

A method of detecting misfire events in an engine uses system identification technology. A linear model is determined for estimating engine firing events based on engine speed fluctuations. The linear model is represented as a difference equation. A Kalman filter is applied to the difference equation to determine unknown parameters of the linear model. Misfire events in the engine are detected based on the linear model.

Engine misfire detection using system identification technology

The present invention provides a method and system for systematically calibrating an engine misfire detection system for an internal combustion engine. The present invention provides a method of collecting a plurality of groups of sample data points. Each of the groups of sample data points represents a cylinder firing event. Optionally, misfire events can be induced during the collection of the groups of sample data points. Using the collected data points, a plurality of compensation parameters is then generated and applied iteratively to the sample data points to generally optimize the detection of misfire occurrences. Compensation parameters that produce a high accuracy misfire detection are selected and can be exported from the calibration system to transport to an engine controller in an internal combustion engine. Compensation of edge-to-edge error in engine speed data, engine noise, misfire signal magnitude, and filtering zone boundary coefficients enhance signal quality and further enhance misfire detection.

Automatic calibration method for engine misfire detection system

A method of estimating an internal temperature of a vehicle battery is based on heat transfer between a heat source and the battery. In addition to the heat source, airflow generated by vehicle movement and radiator fans affects the internal temperature of the battery. The method estimates an initial internal temperature of the battery at engine startup based on how long the engine was off. The temperature of the heat source is determined. A transfer function is determined to represent the effect of the airflow. The method updates a current internal temperature of the battery based on the initial internal temperature and an integration of the transfer function and the heat source temperature.

Vehicular battery temperature estimation

The present invention provides a method and system for detecting engine misfire with an optimal compensation of the RPM signal in an internal combustion engine in which the data signal containing a plurality of groups of sample data points is generated. Each of the groups of sample data points represents a cylinder firing event. The data signal is then conditioned for misfire detection processing. The data engine cycle compensation vectors for the RPM zone is then multiplied to the sample data of the RPM. Each group of sample data points is processed using signal processing techniques and then mapped into a single mapped data point. The mapped data points are further processed and then compared to a misfire detection dynamic threshold. A misfire detection signal is then output if any of the mapped data points fall outside the dynamic threshold. The misfire detection system achieves high degree of accuracy through a signal processing and statistical detection technology. The on-line RPM signal compensation reduces the effects to misfire detection caused by the RPM error from various sources and it further enhances the detection performance.

Optimal engine speed compensation method used in misfire detection

A technique for determining the charge air temperature within an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle without using a dedicated temperature sensor. The technique includes identifying a non-linear dynamic model based on the physical concepts of thermal transfer and system identification technique. The charge air temperature model uses several available physical measurements from the vehicle, including inlet air temperature, engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed, manifold pressure, engine speed, exhaust gas recirculation condition, and the engine fan on/off state. The model parameters are determined based on specific vehicle characteristics, and collected data from the vehicle. The charge air temperature is predicted by the model at regular predetermined intervals from the physical measurements, the vehicle parameters and the charge air temperature from the previous time. An estimation of an initial charge air temperature when the vehicle is turned on can be obtained based on the available temperature sensor readings when vehicle is turned on and stored data of the charge temperature, and all the measured temperature readings just before the engine was turned off.

Method of determining the engine charge temperature for fuel and spark control of an internal combustion engine

A misfire detection apparatus and method for detecting misfire of an engine. The engine has an engine speed and a manifold absolute pressure. An engine signal preprocessing system is provided for determining: a fluctuation associated with the engine speed; an average associated with the engine speed; and an average associated with the manifold absolute pressure. A neural network determines a firing event signal based upon: the determined engine speed fluctuation; the determined engine speed average; and the determined manifold absolute pressure average. A misfire decision determinator detects a misfire of the engine based upon the determined firing event signal. A preferred embodiment also includes a dynamic neural network system with global output feedback.
