A downhole tool, including a first component, a second component that is movable relative to the first component, and an activator disposed to prevent movement between the first and second components, the activator having a surface layer with a stress of at least 200 Mega Pascals (MPa). A barrier tool, including a tubular housing, a mass of material having a surface with a stress of at least 200 MPa within the housing to prevent fluid flowing through the housing, a trigger extending from the mass, and a trigger breaker movable relative to the trigger. A method including applying an input to an activator, disturbing the trigger with the input, and comminuting the body by releasing the stress therein.

A method for allowing flow of a target fluid and choking flow of a nontarget fluid, including exposing a density-based flow control configuration to a fluid, imparting torque to a first baffle, and aligning or misaligning an opening in the first baffle with another opening to allow or choke flow of the fluid. A fluid density valve housing includes a pilot fluid inlet and outlet and a primary fluid inlet and outlet. A shuttle is disposed within the housing. The shuttle comprises a portion having a reference density and a portion defining a cavity fluidically connected to the pilot fluid inlet, the shuttle permitting or denying primary fluid flow depending upon a density of a pilot fluid flowing through the cavity versus the reference density. A method for controlling flow, including comparing density of a pilot flow with a reference density, moving a valve between fully open, fully closed, and choked depending upon the differential density between the pilot fluid and the reference density. A borehole system, including a borehole in a subsurface formation, a string in the borehole, and a fluid density valve disposed within or as a part of the string.

An inflow control device (ICD), including a hydrocyclonic device having a plurality of pressure taps therein and a valve responsive to differential pressure of the plurality of pressure taps. An inflow control device (ICD) including a switch having a primary flow inlet and a primary flow outlet, and a trigger that generates a differential pressure in the trigger due to separation of fluids having different densities. A method for allowing flow of a desired fluid while retarding a flow of undesired fluid in a flow control device, including flowing a pilot fluid through a fluid separator, separating components of the pilot fluid, applying differential pressure of two of the separated components to a valve that is actuated by differential pressure, flowing or retarding flow of a primary flow through the valve in response to the differential pressure.

A downhole assembly includes a disintegrable article, which contains a polymer matrix comprising a polymer having an oxygen content of about 2 wt % to about 30 wt %; an energetic material configured to generate heat upon activation to facilitate a chemical decomposition of the polymer; and at least one of a reinforcing fiber or a filler. The disintegrable article is disintegrated by disposing the downhole assembly in a downhole environment; performing a downhole operation; exposing the polymer in the polymer matrix to the generated heat to chemically decompose the polymer producing a decomposed product containing a small molecule in a supercritical state; and disintegrating the disintegrable article with the small molecule in the supercritical state.

Disintegrable downhole tools and method of use

A disintegrable rubber seal includes a rubber composite, which contains a rubber matrix including a crosslinked rubber; and an energetic filler configured to generate heat upon activation to disintegrate the rubber matrix. The energetic filler contains a metal and a metal oxide. A weight ratio of the energetic filler to the rubber matrix is about 6:1 to about 1:1.
