According to one aspect, a method of switching a first gateway from a voice mode to a facsimile mode comprises: configuring the first gateway to the voice mode for communication with a second gateway over a packet network, receiving a plurality of data packets from the second gateway over the packet network, analyzing one or more of the plurality of data packets, such as UDP packets, and configuring the first gateway to the facsimile mode if the analyzing determines that the one or more of the plurality of data packets carry facsimile data packets. The analyzing may include calculating a length of the UDP payload in accordance with UDPTL packet structure, and deciding the UDP payload includes a UDPTL packet if the calculated length is equal to UDP payload length, as indicated in the UDP header.

Method and system for detecting facsimile communication during a VoIP session

An apparatus and method for configuring a gateway device for a modem over packet network session is disclosed. The method for configuring the first gateway device generally comprises: negotiating with a first client device to establish a first link; receiving, from a second gateway device, data indicative of a second link establish between the second gateway device and a second client device; and configuring the first gateway device to transmit data received from the first client device to the second gateway device using a reliable transport and to receive data from the second gateway device using an unreliable transport if the first link is established with error correction and the second link is established without error correction. In some embodiments the error correction provides flow control between the first gateway device and the first client device. The error correction may be based on MNP or V.42 error correction protocol.

Gateway configuration for controlling data flow in modem over packet networks

There is provided a method for handling a destructive break for use by a first gateway device, where the first gateway device is in communication with a second gateway device over a packet network, the first gateway device is connected to a first modem over a first communication line and the second gateway device is connected to a second modem over a second communication line. The destructive break is received by the first gateway device from the first modem or the second gateway device. The first gateway device controls a sequence of steps of transmitting the received destructive break and discarding data. Further, the first gateway device receives a break acknowledgement in response to transmitting the destructive break and controls a sequence of steps of transmitting the received break acknowledgement, resetting trans-compression engines at the first gateway device and resumption of data transfer.

Processing destructive breaks in modem over packet networks

An apparatus and method for configuring a gateway device for a modem over packet network session is disclosed. For example, a system may include a first gateway device coupled to a first client device and a second gateway device coupled to a second client device, where the first gateway device is coupled to the second gateway device over a packet network. The trans-compression types and capabilities of the first and second gateway devices are determined and used to generate a set of negotiation parameters. The first gateway device then negotiates with the first client device using the negotiation parameters to select a first compression algorithm. A second compression algorithm selected between the second gateway device and the second client devices is also determined by the first gateway device. Then, the trans-compression mode of operation of the first gateway device is configured based on the trans-compression types and capabilities of the first and second gateway devices and the selected first and second compression algorithms. The second gateway device may be similarly configured.
