An antenna apparatus can include a transmission medium that is positioned within layers of an antenna apparatus that are positioned adjacent to a first upper layer that is configured to include a signal receiving and transmission element (e.g. an antenna, patch antenna, etc.). The transmission medium can include or otherwise be connected to one or more resonators so that only a signal within a pre-selected band is passable through the transmission band. Any signal in a band outside of the pre-selected band may not be passable through the transmission medium due at least in part to the resonators. In some embodiments, the transmission medium may be part of a stripline or a microstrip. Embodiments of the apparatus may also be configured to block backward radiation emittable from the antenna to help prevent a body of a person near that device from absorbing such radiation.

Antenna apparatus and communication system

An antenna includes a first body having a ring monopole and a second body positioned below the first body. The second body can have a plurality of notched ring resonators. A spacer can be positioned between the first and second bodies. In some embodiments, the second body can define an artificial ground. In addition, the ring resonators can be arranged and configured to generate a 180&#xb0; phase difference between polarized waves so that a radiated wave from the ring monopole and a reflected wave from the artificial ground have orthogonal polarizations and a 90&#xb0; phase difference to form a circularly polarized radiated wave.

An antenna includes a first body having an array of resonators; a spacer adjacent to the first body, and a second body adjacent to the spacer such that the spacer is between the first and second bodies. The first body can be configured as an artificial metasurface ground plane and the second body can be configured as a monopole.

An antenna system is provided that includes an antenna having an elongated conducting segment, such as a metal rod. An anisotropic metamaterial surrounds the elongated conducting segment of the antenna. The presence of the metamaterial remarkably expands the VSWR &#x3c;2. An example antenna is a monopole antenna, such as a quarter-wavelength monopole antenna, surrounded by the metamaterial.

Embodiments of an RFID tag antenna apparatus can include a ground plane, a first patch, and a second patch. The first and second patches can be positioned to define a radiating slot that is located between the first and second patches. The radiating slot can be configured to receive an RFID chip for attachment of the RFID chip to the antenna apparatus such that the chip is positioned in the slot between the first and second patches and the ground plane. Embodiments of the RFID tag apparatus may be included in a communication system that utilizes one or more RFID antenna apparatuses and/or a RFID device utilizing one or more RFID antenna apparatuses.
