The present invention relates to the isolation, purification, characterization and use of the plant Snf1-related protein kinase (SnRK) gene and genetic products. The invention includes isolated and purified SnRK DNA and relates to methods of regulating water loss and plant drought tolerance, sucrose content, starch content, seed oil content, fatty acid synthesis, seed oil acyl composition, seed size/weight, resistance/tolerance to biotic stresses, increased root biomass, and/or carbon flux into other seed components, plant, using the gene, and to tissues and plants transformed with the gene. The invention also relates to transgenic plants, plant tissues and plant seeds having a genome containing an introduced DNA sequence of the invention, and a method of producing such plants and plant seeds.

Described nucleic acid molecules (and corresponding peptides) encode lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC) acyltransferases. Over-expression of the LPC acyltransferases in a cell may lead to enhanced production of PUFA, or other unusual fatty acids, and/or to increased oil content in the cell.

Methods for identifying lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferases

The novel gene encodes a protein that is involved in seed formation and is associated with plant defense. The invention further relates to the use of the nucleotide sequence in the sense or antisense orientation to inhibit the expression of the plant gene corresponding to the CJAS1 sequence as a means to alter seed metabolism in plants, particularly cruciferous plants, more particularlyspecies, to generate seeds with reduced fiber content and/or altered seed coats. The invention also relates to similar genes expressed in other plant species. The invention also relates to the discovery that the CJAS1 gene is involved in proanthocyanidin (PA) formation.
