In some examples, a fuel cell comprising a first electrochemical cell including a first anode and a first cathode; a second electrochemical cell including a second anode and a second cathode; and an interconnect configured to conduct a flow of electrons from the first anode to the second cathode, wherein the interconnect comprises a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion is closer to the anode than the second portion, and the second portion is closer to the cathode than the first portion, wherein the first portion comprises one or more of doped ceria, doped lanthanum chromite, and doped yttrium chromite, and wherein the second portion comprises one or more of a Co&#x2014;Mn spinel and a ABOperovskite.

Fuel cell system including multilayer interconnect

The present invention includes a fuel cell system having a plurality of adjacent electrochemical cells formed of an anode layer, a cathode layer spaced apart from the anode layer, and an electrolyte layer disposed between the anode layer and the cathode layer. The fuel cell system also includes at least one interconnect, the interconnect being structured to conduct free electrons between adjacent electrochemical cells. Each interconnect includes a primary conductor embedded within the electrolyte layer and structured to conduct the free electrons.

In some embodiments, a solid oxide fuel cell comprising an anode, an electrolyte, cathode barrier layer, a nickelate composite cathode separated from the electrolyte by the cathode barrier layer, and a cathode current collector layer is provided. The nickelate composite cathode includes a nickelate compound and second oxide material, which may be an ion conductor. The composite may further comprise a third oxide material. The composite may have the general formula (LnM1M2)(NiN)O-ABO-CDCeO, wherein A and B may be rare earth metals excluding ceria.

Composition of a nickelate composite cathode for a fuel cell

In some embodiments, a solid oxide fuel cell comprising an anode, an electrolyte, cathode barrier layer, a nickelate composite cathode separated from the electrolyte by the cathode barrier layer, and a cathode current collector layer is provided. The nickelate composite cathode includes a nickelate compound and second oxide material, which may be an ion conductor. The composite may further comprise a third oxide material. The composite may have the general formula (LnM1M2)(NiN)O-ABO&#x2014;CDCeO, wherein A and B may be rare earth metals excluding ceria.

In some examples, a fuel cell comprising an anode; an electrolyte; cathode barrier layer; and a nickelate composite cathode separated from the electrolyte by the cathode barrier layer; and a cathode current collector layer. The nickelate composite cathode includes a nickelate compound and an ionic conductive material, and the nickelate compound comprises at least one of PrNiO, NdNiO, (PrNd)NiO, (PrNd)NiO, (PrNd)NiO, or (PrNdM)NiO, where M is an alkaline earth metal doped on an A&#x2014;site of Pr and Nd. The ionic conductive material comprises a first co-doped ceria with a general formula of (AB)CeO, where A and B of the first co-doped ceria are rare earth metals. The cathode barrier layer comprises a second co-doped ceria with a general formula (AB)CeO, where at least one of A or B of the second co-doped ceria is Pr or Nd.

Composition for fuel cell electrode

The present invention includes an integrated planar, series connected fuel cell system having electrochemical cells electrically connected via interconnects, wherein the anodes of the electrochemical cells are protected against Ni loss and migration via an engineered porous anode barrier layer.

In some examples, a fuel cell comprising a cathode, a cathode conductor layer adjacent the cathode, an electrolyte separated from the cathode conductor layer by the cathode, and an anode separated from the cathode by the electrolyte, wherein the anode, cathode conductor layer, cathode, and electrolyte are configured to form an electrochemical cell, and wherein at least one of cathode or the cathode conductor layer includes an exsolute oxide configured to capture Cr vapor species present in the fuel cell system.

Fuel cell system configured to capture chromium

In some examples, a fuel cell including an anode; electrolyte; and cathode separated from the anode by the electrolyte, wherein the cathode includes a Pr-nickelate based material with (PrA)(NiB)Oas a general formula, where n is 1 as an integer, A is an A-site dopant including of a metal of a group formed by one or more lanthanides, and B is a B-site dopant including of a metal of a group formed by one or more transition metals, wherein the A and B-site dopants are provided such that there is an increase in phase-stability and reduction in degradation of the Pr-nickelate based material, and A is at least one metal cation of lanthanides, La, Nd, Sm, or Gd, B is at least one metal cation of transition metals, Cu, Co, Mn, Zn, or Cr, where: 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;1, and 0&#x3c;y&#x2264;0.4.

The present invention includes a fuel cell system having an interconnect that reduces or eliminates diffusion (leakage) of fuel and oxidant by providing an increased densification, by forming the interconnect as a ceramic/metal composite.
